Can someone please check the 1841 census for Herford for a Esther Baker born in Hertford about 1779. Thanks

Sorry, there is no trace of Esther on the 1841 reference quoted.

HO107/447/3   F.30. P.33.    Butchery Green, Hertford.
Esther Baker  60  Chimney Sweep
John Baker  30  Chimney Sweep
Joseph Baker  20  Chimney Sweep
Amelia Baker  20
Maria Baker 3
Joseph Baker 9mths
plus four sweep boys - Joseph Mansfield 9  -  William Hooton 19  -  William Wood 15  -  William Smith 8.
All born in county except Wiliiam Wood

The preceeding entry reads    ...

William Baker  30  Chimney Sweep
Sarah Baker  25
John E Baker  1
John Wood  20 Sweep
James Gray 15 Sweep Boy
Thomas Wallson 11 Sweep Boy
All born in county except John Wood.

Also found the Street family on the next page.  Will reply on that posting.

Hi Peter


Have just been reading about the lives of chimney sweeps in England and how horrible the conditions  and their lives must have been, I would like to think that my ancesters treated these kids well and also themselves but from what I have read it seemed a very harsh life and very short lived for many. Thanks once again.
