1851 Census for Burdon - Completed

I'd be grateful if anyone could find RICHARD BURDON and his wife SARAH in the 1851 Census. I have them in South Shields in the 1861 with the following information.
RG9/3785/83/25
1861 - at Heigh Huh street, Westoe, South Shields

Robert Burdon       62 -    Engine Smith   South Shields, DUR
Sarah Burdon       61            South Shields, DUR

Do you know if he had a son called Robert born around 1820?

I have found Robert Burdon widower living with his son and family but he was a shoemaker b 1800 in Merington Durham

I don't think that's him. 
I've found him in the 1861 with his wife Sarah but can find no trace of a marriage from 1837 to 1860. In the 1871 Census Sarah is given as a widow.

No sign of either of them on Census 1851......

But.... I think his occupation on C1861 is "Master Mariner"

(Definitely not "engine smith".... that applies to a young lad two or three lines above Robert.

(also their street on C1861 in Heugh Street)

Now if the record says Master Mariner, and he really was a MM rather than just a mariner, there are good records available.... All MMs operating out of and into the River Tyne had to be registered, I think at Customs House, South Shields.

And several libraries hold info on MMs and their ships and their voyages.

From 6 Sep 1836-11 Aug 1837, Master of "Ebeneezer"

From 11 Feb 1839-19 Feb 1841, Master of "Victoria"

From 11 Jun 1851-22 Aug 1851, Master of "Margaret"

From 10 May 1852... Master of "Dorothy", wrecked on Herd Sand, North Shields on 12/13th Nov 1852.

"Paragon" 254 tons, built Sunderland by Cuthbert Potts. Owned from 1838 by UnionShipping Co of Stockton. Then registered on the Tyne 1852-1862

On 1 Mar 1853 sold for £1410 to Robert Burdon, a Master Mariner of South Shields.

On 7 Feb 1859 sold to Robert Stoker(see below) of South Shields.


"Regalia" built 1863 at Southwick, Sunderland.
Owners from 21 Jan 1863 were Robert Stoker, John Morrison, Thomas Burdon and Robert Burdon, all owned 16/64 of the ship,ansd all from South Shields ( 64ths were  the normal "shares" of Tyne ships)

These four sold on the ship on 10 May 1871.

Of course this Robert Burdon might not be yours !

The Burdon's and the Stoker's have a direct link, as a direct ancestor of my wife, the famous shipping magnate, Robert Burdon Stoker's (1859-1919) parents were a "Robert Stoker" and "Sarah Burdon". I have very little information on this couple (apart from Robert senior being born in 1834), but reading the post below, I'm wondering if "Robert Burdon" the "Master Mariner" had a daughter called Sarah... and whether her dad sold a boat to his son in law... starting the whole "Manchester Shipping Magnate" business... The name "Burdon" has been passed down to the current generation of Stokers, through pretty much all the children. Msg me for more details, or any links to Stokers from Manchester/The North/Shipping.
