medal card query
« on: Wednesday 21 December 05 13:05 GMT (UK) »
hi

Can anyone tell me why my great grandfather has two numbers on his medal card? He was in the south staffs 1915 - 1918, and this is shown with his number 19148, but underneath it also has lab corp 578843. Also how do i find out which staff regiment he was in?
thanks
Rebecca

I've got a relative with two numbers on his card.  I understood that he got given a new number when he changed regiments.  Giving soldiers one number that they kept throughout their career came later.  But someone more knowledgable will give us the precise info, I'm sure.

To find out which Battalion of the South Staffs Regiment he served with you'll need to view his service record (if it still exists) at the National Archives in Kew.
