1900/1910 Census - Spencer

I have a William Arthur Spencer,born Yarpole,Hereford in 1857.He was my ggrandfather,and apparently left his wife and children sometime after 1897 and went to the US. I am unable to find him on the 1901 UK census. Would anyone be able to track him down in 1900 or 1901?Sorry to say I have no idea where he went in the US.
Any help appreciated.
