HELP please with Neville!!!!!
« on: Sunday 25 December 05 20:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have had the 1841 census from Santa but cannot get it to work with Neville. I have followed the instructions (as I did for the BMDs which work OK).

What am I doing wrong? How do I fix it?

Thats must be frustrating Jane :(
It's been a couple of years since i installed them but this is what i have in my Neville folder it might give you a few clues :)
CENSUS41.DBF
CENSUS51.DBF
directory.txt
license.key
NEVILLE.exe
Nottsabb.dbf
Nottsbap.DBF
Nottsbur.DBF
Nottsmar.DBF
Nottsmar.tag
user.cfg
users license.rtf

I've written it how it appears (lower and upper case)

I do remember i did have to rename some files/folders but don't remember which ones ;)

Jane,

Try renaming CENSUS41.DBF to census41.dbf

You also need to make sure your files are not READ ONLY. Right click on census.dbf, click properties and make sure that the READ ONLT box is not ticked.

See http://milnes.co.nz/neville/gettingstarted.htm

Hi Suttonrog

I have already done that. I only changed it to upper case when I saw Steves file list.

Have I converted the right thing to the dbf. I opened the index CD and saved the 1841 census index text document as census41/all files/ansi? This is in the Neville program file.

The error message says it

'cannot open the abbrieviations database - exception'

if I click on that it says

'C:\Program Files\Neville32\Neville32.exe'

then if I click on that

'nottsabb.dbf'

but I cannot find an abbrieviations database on the disc thats what is confusing me. I haven't tried the technical help board as it is specific to nottm as far as I know.

Hi Jane, When i put in my 1841 disc this is what i see ;
 A folder named SURNAMES
41CENSU.DBF
41CENSUS.txt
1841 Census Abbreviations.rtf
1841 Help File.txt

In the SURNAMES folder are rtf files for A through to Y (no Z)

Just one more thing i do know NFHS have did stop selling the individual census indexs on there own, so i wonder if they altered what is on their discs, my 1841 is copyright 2003, perhaps you have a newer version.
The guy who does Neville will have worked on the 2003 discs or earlier.

Hi Steve

My disc says copyright 2003 but the file list is different

PDF
1841 census index
Licence agreement
National Archives
NF_H041
Nottinghamshire
Surnames (List A-Y)

It must be a newer version. I think I will email Neville and the NFHS.

Thanks for your help

Hi,
There seems to several different file systems about.

I bought a complete set of the indexes in late 2002. No PDFs, no sub folders and no surnames list
51index.asc
51INDEX.DBF
51PLACES.TXT
51PLACES.RTF
1841Census Abbreviations.doc
1841Census Abbreviations.rtf
census41.asc
CENSUS41.DBF
census51.asc
CENSUS51.DBF
Help.txt

all cases as written

the file dates are march 2002 apart from the census.dbfs which are 1998

These are probably the files that Neville is based on
