COMPLETED - FOLEY Family mystery!
« on: Monday 26 December 05 23:57 GMT (UK) »
If anyone has any spare credits could they look up the GRO refs for John (aka Jack) Foley, born 1 January 1918 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan.

I need the GRO refs to purchase the certificate to verify where his parents were living and to check the maiden name for his mother. This will go some way to solving a family mystery!

Family "word of mouth" states that John Foley's mother Maud was illigitimate and I'm not sure what maiden name she used - could be Smith, Lowe or Jones (her mother was apparently married twice). Alternatively she could have claimed her mystery "father's" surname (apparently a tea dealer)!  :o

John Foley's parents were John & Maud Foley who both died in the early 1920's leaving John junior to be raised by his eldest sister Nellie James nee Foley.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks for that - wierd - that's the birth date his wife (my aunt) gave me yesterday?

I have seen the name mistranscribed as Folie or in some cases Folic - other than that the only thing I can only assume he was born 1917 not 1918??

I'll check again with her for the date but I know he was def born on Jan 1st in Merthyr  ???

Hi Nigel, we're tracing the same line.  My aunt and I Had also heard the tea-taster story, we think we've found the father, but like you cannot prove it. Maud has really become our brick-wall!  We've gone back as far as Patrick Foley, John's father.  If  you want any more info on "our theories", let me know.

Beekay.
