No more pestering
« on: Tuesday 27 December 05 16:12 GMT (UK) »
I have finally got a subscription to Ancestry, my hubby bought it for me for Christmas along with family historian software.  As he has no interest at all in my hobby, I think he has done rather well.

So, I will no longer be constantly pestering you good people for Census material - I may even be able to help someone myself  ;D

Then again, I may be pestering for tips on how to work everything ;)  As knowing me I won't have a clue ::)

Now - I need to pester-it's my first day on Ancestry, so please bare with me.  How do I make a census image bigger.  I keep clicking on the little magnifying glass but nothing is happening, I now have a severe headache!  Help, I want to play with my new toy without doing damage to my eyes. :-[

Hi Wheeldon,

There are 2 different possibilities.
'Magnify' allows you to magnify one section of the image: click 'magnify' button, go to the word you want to see closer and right click again on the word.
If you want to make the whole image bigger, use the 'zoom in' (the magnifying glass with a + in it).

Not sure this is very clear  :P

Hi Wheeldon

I wonder if your man realises you will be awake 24/7 studying census images for the next month at least  ;D  ;D

I save my images to disk then use my own viewer software (Irfanview being my one of choice). If I ever work out the copyright angle I will have copies that I can include in my "Family Book" that may get written in the next 20 years.

Hi Wheeldon,

What an excellent husband! I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with Ancestry.

Are you using a Mac? I had a similar problem with being unable to magnify the census images and asked about it on the thread below. It turned out that it was a problem with my internet software - I need to upgrade ...

Thanks everyone - it's defo not working and not just me being a bit thick.  I asked my computer whiz kid and yes I need to upgrade my software or down load a better viewer and reload our computer - too much family history "rubbish" apparently.  So I'm still going to be pestering as I can't make out much on the census material without getting a migraine.

How very frustrating!

Wheeldon!

Right next to the magnifying glass is a roll down that says 50% if you roll it to 200 % - it really brings it up!

Try it!

Annie, I have tried that and still nothing happens :'(

I'm still playing with my new toy though :)  and although I'm getting quite a headache I've found some good stuff.  Four of my Wheeldons living on the same street in 1851,  two of the families I knew nothing about.  I just wish I could see the original properly-occupations and addresses etc.

When my Hubby finishes sorting everybody else's computers out, maybe he will have a look at ours!  It's a bad time to ask him as everyone and his dog seems to get a computer for Christmas and they all ring my Neil for help.  What happens when I need help?????? Squat diddly - nothing.  However, when they try and give him money, Neil allways says no - just buy the misses a bottle of wine-so I don't do too bad  :P

Hi Wheeldon,

Have you downloaded the Enhanced Image Viewer?  When you open a census image in the top right hand corner are the words 'Having trouble viewing this image?' - click on it, it might help.
