1841-Census look ups please
« on: Tuesday 27 December 05 16:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to find a Sarah Vallance (or any variation of spelling) Sarah would have been born approx 1823.

and any entries in Sussex for a Joseph & Ann Vallance (Any spellings) both born prior to 1820

May be in Worth/Crawley/Balcombe/Lindfield area of Sussex but any that match will do.

Also if there are any entries for a William Terry (Father  William) in the Worth/East Grinsted/Balcombe area any in Sussex entries that may fit.

William Terry would have been born approx 1820 ish.

PS

For the older Valances they may be in Burstow, I know that is Surrey but if anyone has access to the records also that would help. If no joy in Sussex I will post for look ups in Surrey.

Many thanks

Paul

and

HO107/ 1641/ Folio 279/ Page 131 - Copthorne Bank, Burstow

VALLENCE Thomas, Head, Marr, 35, Ag Lab, born Worth
................  Sarah, Wife, Marr, 30, born Worth

................  Thomas, Son, Unm, 9, born Worth

Hi again

Spotted this in the same area as the Vallences in 1851

HO107/ 1641/ Folio377/ Page 121 - Copthorne Common

TERRY William, Head, Marr, 31, Ag Lab, born East Grinstead
.........  Sarah, Wife, Marr, 26, born Worth
.........  Sarah, Dau, Unm, 9, born Worth
.........  Charlotte, Dau, Unm, 7, born Worth
.........  William, Son, Unm, 5, born Clapham, Surrey
.........  Henry, Son, Unm, 2, born Worth

Does that help any?

Hello Chris and thank u.

The Terry family are the correct ones. I have them in 1851 but not in 1841.

VALLANCE Joseph, Lodger, Unm, 61, Lath Cleaver, born Burstow
looks righti'sh only I would have expected him to be around 71 in 1851.

If it is him then he may have a wife Ann in earlier Census.

Apologies I sould have explained that that Sarah Vallance would have been the name prior to marriage so although maybe a relative, Edward (His wife Sarah) would not be the correct one.

Would appreciate anything that comes up for 1841.

Cheers

Paul

Paul,

In the PBN index to 1841, theses are the only Vallance entries for East Grinstead district.

Thomas, Sarah and their eldest Jane in Copthorne.
Therefore no single Sarah Vallance.

Also these three single entries:

John Vallance, 50, Ag Lab, in Worth, born in county.

Ann Vallance, 40, in Worth, livng with Willam  Gibbs & family, born in county

Joseph Vallans, 50, Bricklayer, Three Bridges Lane, place of birth not known

Paul,

I think I have found Sarah.
This is the full listing for the Gibbs family:

What are the census references? - Global Moderator

Gibbs, William, 50, Gardener
Vallance, Ann, 40
Gibbs, Sarah, 15
Gibbs, Ann, 10
Gibbs, Eliza, 7
Turner? (sic), William, 20, Ag Lab.

All born in county.
This is also the southern part of the parish which borders onto Balcombe.

It would be worth asking for a check on the image to clarify the William Turner entry, just in case it turns out to be Terry.

Checking the IGI, it looks like William married Sarah Hards, 7 April 1810, in Worth. Presumably she has died. I cannot find any baptisms of a Sarah, Ann or Eliza Gibbs that would fit. They do match the three of the last four children of Joseph and Ann Vallance though. Only Thomas is missing.

Just had a look at that one Phil's quoted.
Reference is HO107/1111/15/ f5 p2
It's hard to confirm the last member of the household's surname.
I can see why its been transcribed as Turner.
But I think it probably does say Terry.
Anyone else?

Hi

Having looked at the image, I would go with general concensus that it is William TERRY.

Hello All

Firstly thanks for your help

Secondly have I got this right....

Ann Vallance (Who should be the wife of Joseph Vallance maybe he died or they are divorced prior to 1841?)

Ann has taken up with William Gibbs (along with some of her children Ann & Eliza match perfectly age wise Sarah was allegedly 18 in Dec 1841 when she married William Terry, but this entry is about right and maybe she was slightly less than 18 in Dec 1841  ;))

William Terry was living with the family at this time (Census was in June and he married on 25 Dec 1841)

The area in Census is close to Balcome where they married and according to the Mar Cert lived.

and lastly Sarah, father William would now fit of course!

Why do you think Ann kept her name of Vallance when the children have taken the name of Gibbs?

and is there any way I could get hold of a copy of the actual census as I only have a CD with the Census for 1841 on which doesn't show the actual form.

Does everyone think this explains it all?

If it does I am extremely grateful for the help and detective work on this thanks for your help!  :D

Cheers

Paul
