Visiting Glasgow record office, and parishes
« on: Wednesday 28 December 05 12:59 GMT (UK) »
I am planning on visiting Old Kilpatrick and Duntocher in April/May next year.
Do they have a GRO there, or only in Edinburgh?

I am planning on visiting the parish church too.
Will these record still be in the Church, if not where else could they be?
I do not want to go all the way to Glasgow, and be a wasted journey, we need to be prepared  ;)
Thanks

Glasgow has a facility at Park Circus which allows access to many of the records from the old "Strathclyde" region and there is also the facilities at the Mitchell Library. You won't get everything but by contacting these units beforehand you may be able to make something out of the day.

What we can offer you

At the Strathclyde Area Geneology Centre each person will be allocated a computer that has access to the National Index in Edinburgh.  Microfiche readers are available where necessary.

In the unlikely event that the computer system is unavailable, you would revert to the previous system and continue your search using the records held on microfiche.  In some instances, the digitised records are difficult to read and in these instances you would also revert back to microfiche.  Please be aware that the microfiche records are for the Strathclyde area only and cover the years 1855 to 1993.

Thank you Falkyrn,
Is there a charge to visit these places?
And how far do the census go back there/

I am going to have to contact the church to find out if they have the records there.

Thanks for all the info.

Pettsy.

The contact pages have full information regarding what is available. ... There is a charge at Park Circus (it used to be £12 per day)and you have to book ahead ...... I'm not sure about the Mitchell

Park Circus has a computer link to the Edinburgh GROS and microfiche going back to 1855 for the counties that made up Strathclyde region The Mitchell has census records for lanarkshire Ayrshire renfrewshire and Stirlingshire going back to 1841 plus various parish records and many of the archive records from Glasgow and surrounding areas.

We have contacted the Mitchell Library and will go there.
It is free and they have want I need.  ;)

I am also going to visit the church at Kilmaronock, I believe there is just one church there.

All I need to do is find out where I can get the information on Risk Street Home, Dunbarton.
It was the last address of my gg grandad, who died in 1945. I wonder if they would know where he was buried?
Would there be records to this home?

Possible, and again its also possible that the records will be with the Mitchell

if you have a look at www.west-dunbarton.gov.uk they have contact addresses and may be able to tell you if the records survived and who has them (or copies of them).
