Anyone read this place name?
« on: Wednesday 28 December 05 18:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Can anyone read this place name in Hertfordshire?

I have found 3 Halls in the county: Clothall; Shephall; Kelshall but it looks like none of them!

Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith,

If you put Luffenhall (my guess) in Google, there are various sites for Luffenhall, Hertfordshire

For instance, this says
Quote
Luffenhall Town or Village (Town) has an area of 3 hectares ( .01 Sq.Miles).
and has a link to a map

It's Luffenhall - between Stevenage and Buntingford, near Hall's Green.

My usual trick is to look for the town/village  and then tick on maps - local area.

Thanks Bob - they must have appeared over Christmas - or was that wine better than I thought!!  ;)

I put it into Multimap - and it came up with nothing sensible - thanks Watermusic

Hello Keith,

A search for Luffenhall on Old Maps at:
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
meets with success.

On Multimap, it is there but isn't indexed.  Search for Cromer then zoom to 1:50,000 or 1:25,000 and it can be seen.

Hi Jap,

Thanks for that reminder - the number of people I have sent to Old Maps - but as I couldn't find it on the index in multimap - I didn't know where to look!  ;)

I thought it was Luffenhall - but wondered if the "ff" was infact "ss"  but still couldn't find either on GENUKI - usually find most places on there - must be getting lazy, so thought I would keep you people on their toes - which of course didn't even make a ripple in the sea of mystery.

Thanks again for all your help - will put "near Cottered" in my software for others to find!!

Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith,

Good thinking!  Putting 'near Cromer' might send them off on a wild goose chase to the seaside!

I find that Multimap's index is quite incomplete vis-a-vis the names which actually appear in their maps.  If I have some idea where a place might be, I usually look up a bigger town/village which can be found, zoom in to 1:25,000, and then scroll around searching.  Their maps at that scale are great and often seem to include even obscure farm names.

sometimes streetmap.co.uk is better than multimap.  I always try them both, and streetmap is better more often.

Hi loo,

True!  And I've been using streetmap more recently - but stupidly didn't this time.

If one enters luffenhall in street map it goes immediately to a map identical to the 1:25,000 one found with some difficulty on multimap ...
