Hi Pam
The Parish registers, i.e. Marriage Books for Salehurst should be in the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes - but I dont think it will tell you anything more than you already know.
Location: Salehurst, East Sussex, Date: 13 Aug 1834:
Groom: Henry FRENCH
Bride: Mary CLAPSON,
Married by the calling of Banns
Witnessed by Samuel JONES & Eliz F.
Some notes on early marriages:
HARDWICKE’S MARRIAGE ACT.
From 25 March 1754 all Marriages had to be performed in the Parish Church or Chapel – except Quakers and Jews. (They already kept excellent records)
All marriages must be preceded by calling of Bans or issuing of Licence – written parental consent was required for minors (under 21) by licence, registers of bans must be kept.
Banns were read in both parishes – but were an intention to marry – sometimes it did not take place.
Prior to 1754 marriages consist of date, names of couple
i.e. John Smith & his wife Married
From early 1700’s states whether by Bans or Licence.
Printed Registers were used that varied in content – purchased by Parish
Entries signed by both parties – Illiterate made their mark;
But mark did not always indicate Illiteracy; Signature did not always indicate a person could read and write.
Names of Witnesses are important – often relatives.
Parish Clerk often acted as Professional Witness
Parish Clerk often pre-signed pages of Parish Registers
