Polmont burial index
« on: Sunday 01 January 06 20:32 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have access to the pre-1855 burial index?
I am looking for the burials of James and Helen (nee Henderson) Gaff. Both lived all their lives in Polmont, were born about 1770, and were alive in1817.
All the families I am researching are listed on the main page here:

Hi rj,

Below are a list of Gaffs buried in Polmont Churchyard, unfortunately not ones you mentioned:

Jean Gaff (possibly wife of William Small).
Daughter Helen died 19.02.1838 aged 4 yrs.

P. Gaff

A.M(enzies), wife Mary Gaff died 25.01.1759 aged 25
Son John Menzies died 22.05.1763 aged 8 yrs.

George Gaff died 23.04.1873 aged 64 yrs.
Wife Janet Reid died 23.04.1872 aged 72 yrs.
Father George Gaff died 27.10.1836
Wife Ann Broom died 27.01.1847

John Johnston died 8.11.1849 aged 40 yrs.
Wife Margaret Gaff died 20.4.1874 aged 64 yrs.
Children
Son george Johnston died 22.2.1848 aged 10y 10m.
William L. (Johnston) died 4.4.1866 aged 32 yrs.

1787
James Gaff & Ann Reid

I also looked through Muiravonside Churchyard but there's no Gaffs listed.

This doesn't mean that your particular Gaffs aren't buried there, it's just that there's no stone.

I believe that most of the records for Polmont Church were lost in a fire so it's doubtful that you'll be able to find them.

Sorry!

Anne

I have pre-1855 burial index - I just got it yesterday, for Muiravonside, and Polmont is in the same volume...

It has:
Nothing for a Helen Henderson in the 19th c.
Gaff, Helen, buried 14 sep 1833, (abode) 'Lauriston', mortcloth listed as 'best'

Gaff, James, - 3 burials listed in the 19th c., all with abode 'Redding'
18 jul 1829, no mortcloth payment
4 jun 1836, no mortcloth payment
21  jul 1837, no mortcloth payment

Gaff, James, buried 6 Oct 1828, of 'Little Kerse',  no mortcloth payment

There is no further information in the index I have.

Hope you may find them here! I had a quick look at Henderson 'abode' names and the farm or village names given for Henderson deaths do include Redding and Lauriston. I don't know Polmont at all though, so can't help further with the area.

Jenny

Thank you that - Laurieston certainly features in the rest of the family so it looks worth following up.

I have James gaff and Helen Henderson married 11/02/1790. They had 11 children between 1791 and 1817. Haven't been able to find their parents however.

I have them via Mary Gaff who married James Taylor in 1837.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for replying, but I, too, have the same information. The original post was seven years ago and things have moved on since then. As my wife is also descended from them through James Taylor/Mary Gaff perhaps we can exchange information.

I have made a very tentative start in writing up the lives of James and Helen here:
http://www.64regencyancestors.com/index.php?title=James_Gaff_%28c1770_-_1837%29_%26_Helen_Henderson_%281774_-_1833%29

It forms part of a bigger project to write up the lives of all my children's 64 gt-gt-gt grandparents, but this one is barely started. In time...

Richard

I have lots but via James brother William and eventually through to Charlotte McAusland Taylor who was my grand-mother.
I have James & Williams parents as James & Jean Taylor m10/12/1802 but that is where my trail ends.
