Rathaspick
« on: Thursday 05 January 06 15:57 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am helping a friend whose family comes from Rathaspick, Westmeath.

I seem to be internet and geographically challenged as I have not been able to find an on-line map showing this community!  It would sure help my research to know "where" this town is!

Any help, much appreciated.  BTW ... the family's name is Taaffe or Taffe and they emigrated c. 1870 to Brooklyn NY.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Diane :-)

Diane:
This should help some. From Lewis' Topographical Dictionary. Link below extract.

"RATHASPICK, a parish, in the barony of MOYGOISH, county of WESTMEATH, and province of LEINSTER, on the mail coach road from Dublin to Sligo; containing, with the market and post-town of Rathowen (which is separately described), 2170 inhabitants. This parish is bounded on the west by Lough Glynn, and on the south and east by the river Inny. It comprises 4542 statute acres, exclusively of a considerable portion of bog: the land is good for pasture and tillage, and the system of agriculture is improving. Limestone abounds, for which there are quarries, and there is also abundance of limestone gravel and marl. Petty sessions and fairs are held at Rathowen."

http://www.booksulster.com/library/topog/r.php

And here is Rathowen.

"RATHOWEN, a market and post-town, in the parish of RATHASPICK, barony of MOYGOISH, county of WESTMEATH, and province of LEINSTER, 10 1/2 miles (N. W.) from Mullingar, on the road to Longford, and 50 (W.) from Dublin; containing 605 inhabitants. The town comprises 97 thatched and 12 slated houses, the parish church, the R. C. chapel of the union of Russagh (in which a small school is held), and the market-house, where a market is held every Tuesday; there are fairs on May 15th and on the second Tuesday in December: it is also a constabulary police station."

Hope this helps.

Good luck,

Pat

Diane:
You are most welcome. If you give some info on the Taaffes I am sure people here will try to help.

Good luck.

It was suggested that I post my friend's TAAFFE info, now that I know where Rathaspick is!

Bridget ???, born c. 1826 & Thomas TAAFFE (he appears to have died in Ireland) had at least 2 daughters:
Bridget TAAFFE, born c. 1854
sister, Mary TAAFFE, born c. 1856

There is also an "older" brother to Mary and Bridget called John FLYNN!  So, I am imagining that Bridget's marriage to TAAFFE was a 2nd marriage.

The mother Bridget, daughter Bridget and the son, John Flynn all ended up in Brooklyn NY.  The obituaries for both Bridgets and daughter Mary mention that they came from Rathaspick, Westmeath, Ireland.

So, if this family rings any bells ... I'd love to hear about it!

Thanks,
Diane  :)

Hello Diane,

I looked at http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php The Taaffe surname does not appear in Griffiths Valuation of Co. Westmeath which took place in 1854. It is possible the family worked on the staff of one of the large houses in the area which would have had living quarters for the staff. This means they would not appear in the Valuation as it only lists head of household. Ringing bells might be the clue - a touch of the days of Upstairs Downstairs  :D

All the Best, Christopher

Thanks Christopher ...

Please remind me ... was Griffiths Valuation only inclusive of land owners?

It's definitely the period when they were having their children in Rathaspick.

Appreciate!

Diane :-)

Hello Diane,

Griffiths Valuation included every landowner and householder.
http://www.from-ireland.net/gene/griffithsval.htm  I have just registered on http://www.myirishancestry.com which also has Griffiths Valuation on it. Registration is free. You are allowed to select four counties only on this site.
It seems to contain more information than http://www.failteromhat.com

Best Wishes,

Christopher
