They are directories that contain lists of Trades and Gentry
a similar set up to todays telephone directories.

There were several publishers and a look at

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/     

will give you access to quite a few.

I have found directories like Pigots, White's and C.N.Wrights very useful in my research, they add abit of colour to the normal facts you get from census and BDM.
And it is really interesting to see all the old adverts for sewing machines, jewellery etc.
I also have been able to use them to find people in census's when my normal methods have failed.

Not forgetting Slaters as well.

I have found them very useful as they fill in the years between the census', but also give the address of the business, which is not always the same as where they lived.

They also give a good background on the town and the area.

Hint: you can save the pages from the historical directories ste by printing them as a pdf and saving them to your hard drive.
