Missionary Murder
« on: Monday 09 January 06 17:12 GMT (UK) »
Really don't know if I'm putting this in the right area. I'm looking for information on Richard Simpson, I know he was born around 1850 in the Silsden area of Yorkshire....he went to Korea as a Missionary where he was murdered...can anyone tell me more about Richard or tell me where to focus my search??

Thankyou in anticipation.

If you can find out for which society he was a missionary you will probably find out about him from there archives if you can  locate them.  Certainly the non-conformist churches would have a very clear record of any missionary who was murdered in their service.

Each branch of the church had its own missionary society in those days and so the first step is to find out where his allegiances lay.  If you "google" the society name you will then be able to find its history, who it has merged with etc. and so where the archives are likely to be.

Thanks for your reply, I do know that his Brother was a Rev with the Church of England...I know it doesn't indicate that he would follow the same church....so if he is 'Conformist' where do I look.

That would probably be the Church Missionary Society - the CofE's mission arm.

try looking at the Mundus website - mundus.ac.uk - they have information about places and people. I couldn't see Richard  Simpson, but they point you in the direction of information on missions in Korea.

Hope this helps,
