1 Chichester Street, Brighton.  1851 to 1871

Who was the T. BURTENSHAW living at this address on 7.Oct.1868?  That was the day he/she was the informant of the death of Mary Burtenshaw of 70 Rose Hill Terrace.  However, no relationship was mentioned, and I am unaware of any surviving son, or daur-in-law, with the initial “T”.  (There was a son, James, but Mary’s death cert clearly states “T”).

There was no Burtenshaw family living at the Chichester St address in 1861, but was there in either 1851 or 1871?

There was a Burtenshaw family at 5 Chichester St in 1861 as follows:

Burtenshaw
???Caleb, 38, shoemaker, b. Poynings
Fanny G, wife, 34, b. Poynings
Elizabeth, daur, 14, b. Poynings

Thanks from Moltom

In 1871 there are two THomas Burtenshaw with families in Brighton
RG10 1080 F75 p9 29 Ditchling Rd
Thomas 30 Publican b Brighton
Sarah 33 b Eastbourne
Emily 6
Richard 4
George 2 all b Brighton
Mary niece 14 domestic servant b Eastbourne

RG10 1081 F139 p37 23 Blackman St

Have you seen the original of the death certificate or could it have been copied wrongly?    Worth checking.  T and J can be easily confused.

Don't know if this will help, but the Post Office Directory of Sussex (1866) lists an insurance agent called T.A. Burtenshaw, living at 14 Prince Albert Street in Brighton.  Maybe just a coincidence.

Cheers
