Are the Index fiche complete?  The guy I'm looking for may not have been registered as he  does not appear to be on this index. Could a person actually be registered but not on the fiche?     
What would have happened when he  wanted to marry in 1917. He was conscripted into the Army in 1918 would he need to show a birth certificate?
Any ideas, anyone???

Hi Julie,

No, they're not complete, but missing records occur more often in the early days of the Colony, rather than later on as bureaucracy developed.

I don't think your individual would need to show a birth certificate for either a marriage or on joining the army (the latter only wanted men who could fight, and there are many examples of men who 'lifted' their age for WWI and if they survived to join up for WWII 'dropped' it again, neither of which might be accurate.

More likely is that he appears in the NZ BDM indexes under a mis-spelt name.

No need to show a birth certificate to join the army I know of family that ran away from home at in one case 12 another 14 and put their age up despite their parents trying to get them back not a chance. Surprisingly enough they survived it all and returned so I guess it was the luck of the young.

To marry in those days a Christening certificate or a parent signing the document to say that was your proper age was enough.
