Hi Flik

I have Ellen Forward born 1838 in Grimsby marrying Joseph Langmaid born 1836 Lansallos.  My Forwards orginally came from Polperro but then some moved to Hull and Grimsby.  Ellen moved back to Polperro sometime before 1859 when she married Joseph.  If have info on Ellen and Josephs children if you don't have this.

Apologies for re-opening a really old thread, but I am hoping this may be of interest.

My 3xG Grandfather was a sailor named Thomas Forward, born 16 Nov 1802 in Polperro.  I have not worked out how he is linked to the other Forward families in Polperro.  It doesn't seem feasible he could have bee a son of either two well publicised Forward families of Polperro around that time.

In 1841 I have my 3 x g grandmother Sarah Forward (nee Hamlyn) and family living in Woolster Street, Plymouth. The interesting bit is they were living with a John Langmaid, 25, carpenter and an Elizabeth Langmaid, 20.

I believe there must be a link to Polperro as Langmaid is another Polperro family name.

Would be great if someone searching similar interests had some info.

Thanks,

Welcome to Rootschat  PastyMuncher76

I am not related by the Langmeads are in a different household (family group) to Sarah and children 1841 Census.

1851 John Langmead is born c 1816 Lamerton, Devon.
(later Census also Devon)

So does not seem to have a Cornish connection when born.

Trish :)

Thanks for the response.  Must just be a coincidence of surnames.

Thomas Forward married Sarah Hamlyn on 6th Nov 1832 in Stoke Damerel.  He died 15th Nov 1882, the eve of is 50th birthday, drowned while his vessel was alongside at Devonport, supposed to be passing from his vessel to the quay, according to a newspaper article of the time.
He is registered as a mariner on the documents we have.  There is a Merchant Seaman record from 1844 for him detailing he was born at Polperro on 16th Nov 1802.  This has him residing at Woolster Street, Plymouth, which ties in with the address the family are at in the 1841 census.

I can find no record of Thomas being born in Polperro, although he may not have been included in records for some reason.
Most of the Forward's seem to have been recorded well.
I narrowed down possible parents in Polperro to be Richard & Catherine or John & Susannah.
Richard and Catherine had 2 sons named Richard born in 1800 (died in infancy) and 1803, so doubt they would have had a Thomas in between.
John and Susannah baptised son William on 8th May 1803, which is within only 6 months of Thomas apparently being born, so even if William was a couple of years old it would seem unlikely he wouldn't have been baptised the same time.

Would love to be able to tie him in somewhere.  Thanks,

Hi Flik,

I have Langmaid ancestors that came from the Fowey-Lanteglos-StVeeps & Lansallos area (quite close to Polperro). They eventually moved to Canada in the 1870s. I would be interesting to see if there is a connection to your group of Langmaids.
