At a guess, he either quarried slate (where was he?) or worked in roofing with slate.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

He was in Marylebone, London, so he must have worked on roofs.

Not relevant in your case I realise but a slateman in a coal mine was responsible for moving the rock as distinct from the coal being mined.
