Dilleys of Eynesbury
« on: Friday 13 January 06 23:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am very new to this site and indeed to internet forums.  I am currently tracing my family tree and I have traced by maternal grandmother's family back to 1851 where I have found a George Dilley born 1800.  According to the original census record he was born in "Hainsbury Huntingdonshire".  I can find no record of Hainsbury, but there were a number of Dilleys living in Eynesbury and I think therefore that this was problay the birth place.

I am therefore interested in any information anyone has on Dilleys in Eynesbury between say 1700 and today.  George left Eynesford and settled in London.  There is however a William Dilley born 1799 who could be a brother or cousin.

I live in New Zealand and all my research must be via the internet so any information would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

Dave

Hi Dave

A belated welcome to Rootschat.

You haven't picked the easiest parish in England to research online! The LDS was refused permission by the local bishop to film many parish registers in Hunts, including Eynesbury, so there are no births or marriages online. Burials are available online at http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/ but it's a pay per view site after a free index search.

Hunts Family History Society has transcribed a number of parish registers which are available for purchase on fiche, but unfortunately not Eynesbury. BUT their marriage index available on fiche does include Eynesbury:
working backwards from 1837
1835 Sarar marr William Martin
1834 Abraham m Mercy Eastell
1826 John m Elizabeth Picking
1818 William m Judith Otterway
1815 Edward widower m Elizabeth Easter widow
1813 Elizabeth m Thomas Jakes of St Neots Hunts
1805 William m Mary Brace widow
1797 Edward m Phyllis Mayes
1795 Abraham widower m Ann Nunn widow
1775 Abraham of Roxton Beds m Elizabeth Richardson of Kimbolton Hunts

And prior to 1754 there was only one Dilly marriage in the whole of Hunts.

You may get an idea from the marriages where George and William could have fitted in but it will take  baptisms to confirm any suspicions, and that can only be obtained from Huntingdon Records Office, which does run an online research service, but it costs, although fees are reasonable.

Hope this gives you a start

Regards

David

These are all the Dilleys I can find in Eynesbury in 1841

HO107/453/14/13
Huntingdonshire Eynesbury
Back Street
william Dilley 40 Lab
Judith            40
Arthur            15
George           10
Edward             4
All said to be born in county

This one would fit with the William who married Judith Otterway from the earlier reply by Bedfodshire boy.

HO107/453/10/11
Back Street
Abraham Dilley 30 Waggoner born in county
Ann                 24                  not born in county

HO107/453/29/12
Eynesbury
Weald
Farm called Eynesbury field
Arthur Dilley 10 M.S born in county
(writing is poor here so could be Lilley)

HO107/453/27/18
High Street
Elizabeth Dilly 60
Ann (looks like Paster) 35 Lacemaker
James Dilley   15 Lab
all born in county.
1841 census does not give  relationships so you cannot assume that male and female of the same name are married they could be brother and sister for example but there is a good chance they are husband and wife if the ages fit.Beware also of the tendency to round down the ages of adults.
if you intend to search the later census extensively joining ancestry would probably be worth it.

Hi Guys

Many many thanks for the info on the Dilley's of Eynesbury.  I guess you must be related to all the Dilleys in Bedfordshire, Bedfordshireboy ?  Also sorry to take so long to reply, but I have only just found your posting, having been away for awhile.

I love the user name Yonderpeasant and once again thanks for the info.  I will now sit down and see if any of it fits in with the info I already have. I have joined Ancestory, but I have not had much joy there up to now.

Very Best Wishes

Dave

I am interested in these Eynesbury Dilley's, too.

In particular the marriage mentioned between Elizabeth Dilley and Thomas Jakes, (of St Neots), in 1813.

Is there anyone out there with the Marriage Index that may provide the info that is on this marriage entry, please?

Many thanks.  Carole
