1891 (Essex) - LAMB

Could someone please look for the following family on the 1891 census, please?

Head: James Lamb (a painter, according to his daughter's 1905 marriage certificate)
Daughter: Mary Edith Lamb (later Mary Edith Barrington)
Son: Arthur Albert Lamb (whom I believe never married)

All I know is that Mary was born around 1886 and I think Arthur was older than her.

Are the names of the marriage witnesses any help?  Any address for her on the marriage certificate?

I found this James LAMB, painter, in 1901 (not too far away from Newington) with son Arthur but no dau Mary/Edith ...............

That's very interesting, but I can't be sure it is them... yet.

We have letters from Arthur Lamb with various Romford addresses. Frank Barrington was originally from Bristol, but it looks like he moved to where Mary lived. He lived in Romford until his death and it looks like all his children were born and lived there.

You're right to say that Mary Edith Lamb married in St Mary Newington, Southwark in 1905. I have parts of the marriage certificate (one part is missing, but fortunately it is the least important part). It says that her father was James Lamb, a painter. The residence at the time of marriage was 37 Carter Street for both the bride and groom. It says she was 19.

The witnesses are Arthur Albert Lamb (who we are certain was Mary's brother) and Edward Thomas (we've no idea who he was). We know that the Lamb family had a connection to Hither Green, Kent - hence my previous post. Mary's estranged husband Frank William Barrington is buried at Hither Green cemetery.

I'm afraid I don't have anything else. I don't even have many possible GRO references. But if I find any that could match, then I'll order a certificate or two to hopefully push things along.

Francis William BARRINGTON married Ethel May E LAMB according to the GRO indexes - I guess you haven't got the part of the certificate that says her full name or is the index a mistake

Ah! We have the original certificate and it's extremely worn. The tiny piece that's missing is the first part of their names. You could have cracked something here.

The Barrington line is the one we're most interested in (that's Mum's maiden name), and on every census he's down as 'Frank'. How silly that we didn't think of 'Francis'?!

Of course, the real bonus here is that it's not Mary Edith at all, but 'Ethel'... Which fits what you gave us earlier from the 1891 and 1901 censuses/censes/whatever the correct word is.

The date of their marriage was 2 July 1905.

We've just looked closely at the original marriage certificate and it does look like the 'r' in 'Mary' has been ever-so slightly crossed out. We assumed it was just a mark on the paper. There are several others. But, after what you found, now it seems much more than just an innocent blob of ink.

Sorry for the delay. We're just getting back into the swing of things.

We got the birth certificate and it definitely is "Ethel May".

Name: Ethel May Lamb
Born: 18 August 1885
Parents: James Lamb (cab driver) and Annie Bowen
Address: 19 Morris Road, Bromley
Registration District: Poplar (sub-district of Bromley in the county of Middlesex)

The birth wasn't registered until 25 September 1885. Is that unusual? It seems very late to us.

We are pretty sure that this all fits, so we're going to plough on. There was a mysterious "Flo" connected to Ethel May. This could be the Florence listed below. We're going to find her on the 1901 census next, as well as finding a marriage for James Lamb and Annie Bowen.

We also got Annie Lamb's death certificate. She died in 1894.  It looks like James re-married, so the 1901 entry below with James Lamb and his wife Emma is now perfectly plausible. Presumably the young Edith shown on the 1901 census was Emma's daughter. We want to find out about her, too.

We also want to find James Lamb on the 1871 census. He'd have been about 16, so we should get the names of his parents.

It's going to be a busy night by the looks of it!

That's great news

I wouldn't worry too much about a birth not being registered until several weeks after the event - even today, 42 days are allowed to register a birth so it would have been within the allowed limit
