Mysterious disappearance of relative
« on: Saturday 14 January 06 21:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I am researching a Theodore Rae, born in Oldbury Worcestershire about 1871.

According to family stories he went missing, perhaps having been murdered? He appears in the 1891 census in Durham working as an analytical chemist, and after this I cannot seem to find any record of him. I have looked in the 1901 census and searched for death records but have had no luck. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to research relatives who seem to have disappeared without a trace?
Many thanks.

If he was last heard of in Durham, perhaps the Durham archives could help.  There could have been something about him in the local press.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Theodore Merz Rae born Sept 1870 West Bromwich(6b 671)

Just wondered as his parents were scottish have you checked the 1901 census for Scotland in case he was there with maybe a relative.

I think the other vitla question is whether he had any dependents.  If he had and disappeared, he sounds as though he probably earnt enough to have some assets and there may be some court actions to gain access to these.

In 1891 he appears as single so i guess he probably wouldnt have had any children? Does anyone know how if i would be able to find out if there are mentions of him in Durham local press without making a trip up there? Many thanks!
