shuttleworths in Nottingham
« on: Sunday 15 January 06 12:40 GMT (UK) »
George was a boat builder and was dead by the time his daughter Sarah Anne was 3. His wife Charlotte brought up 2 children by herself until Sarah Anne married husband 1. She then married a man in Derbyshire. Does anyone out there have any further info on the name Shuttleworth and any info of where it orginated and  how it would have migrated to Nottingham would be helpful. Was it because of the lace/knitting manufacture.

Hi Ernestine,

you may find these pages useful

http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/default.aspx

It describes Shuttleworth as a habitational name, derived from places in Lancashire, Derbyshire and West Yorkshire. Certainly in 1891, the vast majority of Shuttleworths were centred on Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Looking at the Notts FHS baptism index, it has only 43 Shuttleworth entries (though not a complete county record). The father's occupations listed are very diverse and don't seem tied to one occupation.

I see that your George was a boat builder and suspect he gravitated to Nottingham and the River Trent via the waterways. I'm not much help here but it was an interesting question :)
