Hello anyone else have a GIBBS family in Chorleywood area 1780's?
« on: Sunday 15 January 06 16:39 GMT (UK) »
Have managed to track my Gibbs family back to Chorleywood area about 1780's.
John Gibbs DOB about 1788 parents unknown as yet.
The family had relocated to Southwark by 1808 when John married a Susannah Saddler in St Saviours,Southwark.
Would be very interested to contact anyone else with Gibbs in this araea at this time.
Best wishes
Jenny

Hi Jenny

Sorry I don't have any Gibbs in my family but I do have Chorleywood.

Just in case it's any help, from the Militia List there is a Thomas Gibb recorded in Chorleywood in 1772 a labourer.

Also a Robert & Richard in Batchworth & John & Mathew in Rickmansworth Town.

I had a look on the IGI & there is a John Gibbs born in 1781 Rickmansworth to a Thomas & Elizabeth though he may be to old for your John.

Hope this helps in some way.

Regards

Thanks Maddie,
Thats really kind of you, I'm storing all this info as you never know who is linked to who.
I had looked before at the Rickmansworth entry and I'm not ruling it out so the two Rickmansworth ones that you found could well be possibles as could be the Chorleywood one.
John gave his age on the census as 50 in 1841 so born about 1891, but I know they round them up or down to the nearest 5 years. He married in 1808 usual age for marriage approx 18-22 years so 1886-1890.
Thanks for your help
Jenny

Hi Jenny

You are welcome. Out of interest, there are quite a lot of deaths on the Herts BI for Gibbs in Ricky so if you need any info, I will help if I can.

Hi
Whilst I have no Gibbs in Chorleywood, I am in touch with a Robin and Barbara Gibbs in Australia. They emigrated from here in the 1970s, but were born and grew up locally. I live in Croxley Green, and Chorleywood is about 3 miles North West from here.
A quote from Robin's letter says :
My Grandad and Grandma    James Gibbs born 1878 at Croxley and Selina Sophia Miles born 1874 at Maidstone, Kent were married 25 12 1901 at Chorleywood.  Selina’s   father and mother were John Miles and Rebecca Carter both of Chorleywood
James was the blacksmith at Mead Autos Garage, New Road, Croxley Green, which is about 50 feet from my front door! Robin sent me a scanned photo of 3 Giibs brothers sitting and standing around a horse drawn wagon (c1930) outside the garage.
James was apparently one of 8.
If you are interested, I can put you in touch with Robin.

Hi Phil,
That would be great as I have made no further progress with this branch of the family beyond John.
You never know there could be a link and that would be great.

Hi Jenny

Just in case you do find any link to the Gibbs in Croxley, I can tell you Jesse Gibbs
started the Blacksmiths in about 1899.

I believe it became Mead Autos in the 1950's.

Good luck with your research.
