KILNHURST - ST THOMAS SCHOOL LOG BOOK

I have just finished transcribing the above log book.  There are lots of names mentioned.  Did any of your ancestors attend between the years 1888-1921.  This is a wonderful piece of social history, which touches on all the events of the time, WWI with Zeppelins given as a reason for children's absence, Kilnhurst Co-op Divi payouts.

Here are a few names - James, Emily and Eric THORPE; Albert SPENCER; Charles JAGGER and his sister Edith; Cyril PEAT marrying one of the teachers Alice GRAFTON. Headteacher was Edward KETTLE.

I have a complete transcription which will be published soon by Rotherham FHS at a reasonable price.  But also plan a book for Kilnhurst St Thomas School funds.  Can anyone out there interested in adding information, photos towards the book, please get in touch.

Hello Kilnhurst

My Ancestors lived in Pottery Cottage Kilnhurst, which actually was two cottages made into one for the sixteen children they had between 1865 and 1890. George Oliver the potter later warehouseman and Jane his wife, when her family grew up, also worked in the Pottery.
I am a member of the RFHS and look forward to obtaining the books when available.  I have read the School Log and everything I can lay my hands on about Kilnhurst. My nephew Graham Oliver is a local area pottery expert.
Unfortunately the Oliver family did not go much for photographs, the only one I have is of Joseph, born 1885, in his army uniform in 1914. I do have an oval dish that was made at the time the Olivers worked in the Pottery.
The Pottery was at the Rawmarsh end of Kilnhurst and I think some of them went to a Rawmarsh school.

Do you know if the transcription has been published yet?

I have a whole generation of my paternal line (Wild) being born in Kilnhurst from 1877 to 1896, so it would be interesting to see if they are mentioned.  Also connected would be the Thorpe, Whitfield, Tingle, Longden, Fitton, Green and Kirby families.

Just out of interest, I have just received some information from the National Football Museum about Tommy Thorpe (born 1881) who was from Kilnhurst.  He was a professional football player (makes a change from miners in my family !! ) who played for Rawmarsh Athletic, Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley FC and Northampton Town and was still playing into his early forties. He was a goalkeeper. 

He married Sarah Ann Fitton Wild in 1906 in Kilnhurst St Thomas Church and their children were baptised there, and Sarah and their eldest daughter both died in 1918 (within 2 weeks of each other) and are buried at Kilnhurst.  I am currently awaiting their death certs to confirm just how they died.

You mention James, Emily and Eric THORPE, I think at least James and Emily are theirs.  I know they had a daughter called Olive, but I've not come across an Eric yet. 

So now you've got me all over-excited about the transcription - I think it must have some info relevant to my lot, I'll definitely have to have a copy.

Good news - the log book is available on CD from Rotherham FHS a complete transcription and the cost is only £4.
Included is an name index in case the don't want to read the whole book -however it is an interesting read (in my opinion!)

I went on RFHS site last night looking for it, but it wasn't on there yet.  The site looked a little "not updated" so do I just complete one of the forms to send off for it or can I order online?

You know how it is, now I know it's available I want one yesterday
