1851 census lookup Muirkirk (COMPLETED -THANKS)
« on: Tuesday 17 January 06 14:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Could some kind person please look up the following family in Muirkirk in 1851 census.  1851 is the only year I do not have.

Robert Beck   38   Wright/labourer  b.Moffat Dumfries
Jane Beck (ms leithhead)   43   b.Moffat Dumfries
William Beck   12   b.Muirkirk Ayr
James Beck   10   b.Muirkirk Ayr
Robert Beck   7   b.Muirkirk Ayr
Agnes Beck   5   b.Muirkirk Ayr
Euphemia Beck   3   b.Muirkirk Ayr  (twins possibly died by 1851)
Jane Hair Beck   3   b.Muirkirk Ayr  (twins possibly died by 1851)
Janet Shaw Beck   1   b.Muirkirk Ayr

There is dispute as to Williams age.  He was christened in 1841 same date as brother James.  However 1841 census and other documents show him to be 2 years older and born 1839.  Maybe 1851 census may back this up.

Appreciate any help.   Thanks!!   :)   :)   :)

Hello L23,

In the 1851 census index for Muirkirk, Ayr, is the family below.

Beck Robert, age 38y,
Beck Jean, age 40y,
Beck William, age 12y,
Beck James, age 10y,
Beck Robert, age 8y,
Beck Agnes, age 5y,
Beck Janet, age 1y.

Its not unusual for two children of different ages from the same family to be baptized in Scotland.

Regards,
Jonn

Hi Jonn

Thank you for that.  I had thought when I first started on this line years ago that William & James were twins as there are a lot of twins in the Beck line.  But evidence suggests 2 year gap.  I had wondered why Robert & Jane waited over 3 years to have their first child!  I think the twins died near birth.  They went on to have another Euphemia baby in 1851.  This being Jane's mothers name.

Anyway, thanks again.
