Hello Jack.

I believe the James Crawford you are looking for may be my Great, Great, Greatgrandfather.  I have only recently began researching and whilst reading through this forum came upon your query.

I have a James Crawford (B. 1858) married a Margaret Potts (B.15.1.1860) married 1 July 1880. (Gorbals Glasgow)

James Parents :  James Crawford & Margaret Ogilvie Married 18 Sept 1855 (East Parish Greenock)

Margarets Parents : John Potts & Margaret Clark Married 22 Jan 1856 (Middle Parish Greenock)

IF these are your people and I can help further, please get in touch.

Regards.

Hello Hevzee

Thanks for the information,I think you are correct, its a great help and much appreciated. I would have replied sooner but had problems with the computer. Was John Potts born 8.8.1830 in Port Glasgow and do you know the parents of James who married Margaret Ogilvie? I suspect his father is David Crawford of Greenock but as yet I cannot prove it.

James and Margaret(Potts) are my wife's ancestors, their son Archibald Mcnair Crawford migrated to Australia in the 1920's. I have this information if you are interested.

Thanks again, Jackhammer

Hello again Jack.

The only further information/dates I have for John Potts are from a photocopy of pages in a family bible belonging to relatives in Greenock ~

Born  27.7.1831
Died  24.11.1910 (aged 79)

I'm afraid I don't know the whereabouts he was born.

Dates in the bible for Margaret (Clark) Potts ~

Born  30.?.1837 (afraid I can't make out the month)
Died  11.9.1913 (aged 75)

I have some information on Archibald (sent to my Mother from her cousin in Greenock who I believe got them from relatives in Australia   ???)

The parents of James who married Margaret Ogilvie are James Crawford & Janet Wright, we think they were married 19 Jan. 1835 - and there for the moment our trail has come to a halt.  We have a few names to chase but are not getting very far at the moment.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards.

From 1881 Census:

POTTS Margaret, married, 42, b. Dunbarton, Dunbarton
CRAWFORD James, 23, son-in-law, engineer, b. Greenock, Renfrew
CRAWFORD Margaret, 21, daughter, married, b. Greenock, Renfrew

Address: 2 Watt Place, Middle Greenock, Renfrew.

Husband John Potts does not appear to have been home on day of census.

In respect of John Potts, his parents were Anthony Potts and Marion McTaggart. These are some of the children showing for the couple on IGI, including John's entry:

1. WILLIAM POTTS  Christening: 31 AUG 1827 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
2. MARY ANN POTTS Christening: 30 JUN 1823 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
3. JOHN POTTS Christening: 08 AUG 1830 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland

And from FreeCen, this could be their 1841 entry (ages slightly all over the place and Marion down as Janet but looks likely. The 1841 Census Index does not give relationships, Janet could be a different person e.g. sister etc ):

POTTS Anthony, 41, Porter b. Outside Census County
POTTS Janet, 45, b. Outside Census County (1841)
POTTS Mary, 13, b. Renfrewshire
POTTS William, 10, b. Renfrewshire
POTTS John, 6, b. Renfrewshire

Address: Back Row, Port Glasgow-Renfrewshire

Regards.

By the look of the entry in her marriage cert., it is probable that Margaret Ogilvie's parents John OGILVIE and Janet MCNEILAGE weren't married when she was born. This is Margaret's IGI entry:

MARGARET OGILVIE  Birth: 08 MAY 1838      East Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
Parents: Father: JOHN OGILVIE    Mother: JANET MCNEILAGE

This looks like mother and daughter Margaret in 1841, from FreeCen:

MCNEILLYE Mary, 50, Independent, b. Outside Census County
MCNEILLYE John, 30, Ship Carpenter, b. Renfrewshire
MCNEILLYE Janet, 25, b. Renfrewshire
OGILVIE   Margaret, 3, b. Renfrewshire
PATERSON Robert, 15, Carpenter Appren,b. Renfrewshire
PATERSON William, 15, Carpenter Appren, b. Renfrewshire
SOMMERVILLE Anthony, 15, Carpenter Appren, b. Renfrewshire
CAMERON   James, 25, Stoker, b. Outside Census County
LENNON John, 40, Independent, b. Outside Census County
ROBERTSON John,   35, Independent, b. Outside Census County

Address: 23 Arthur St, Greenock-Renfrewshire

Regards.

Monical.esl -

I wonder if your Janet McNeillage could be a sister to my Margaret McNeillage enquiry, mentioned in the Alexander Leitch - British Navy seaman?

Thanks,

Hi Margaret

Sadly she's not mine....just doing the searches!

Maybe the 1841 census entry I posted can provide you with some clues to follow up on.

Regards.
