1901
« on: Wednesday 18 January 06 19:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi there
I am trying to find my grand father in 1901.
Frederick Joseph Wakeman Born 1882 in Birmingham.
Actual address: Back of 5 Bolton Road, Aston.

He was in the Dorset Regiment No. 40671 R.A.M.C.
He joined the Militia in 1899 November 29th. He was 17 and half years old.

He enlisted in the Dorset Regiment at the age of 24.

Would you need any other information?

I know where he was in 1914, 1915 and 1918,

but of course, we do not have 1911 Census :'(

Can you help?

Many thanks

Gill

Hi Gill

Parents names would be good, were they Charles & Caroline?

Hi Gill, as he is not with the rest of the family, or anywhere else I can see perhaps he is fighting in the Boar War.

Have you checked out the National Archives for his Medal Card & Service history?

Hi again Wendi

No, not yet, but I will check out what you suggest on the National Archives and let you know how I go,
as I am not really much good at searching some web sites, maybe I am a bit thick:) but I will give it a go.

Many thanks
Gill

Give it a go Gill, no one's watching ;) here is the search page for his Medal Card - Always use the "advanced search" if you can, this applys to all websites.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/power-search.asp?searchType=powersearch

In the "Other keywords" entre something - in this instance try Dorset 'cos you know that was his Regiment - unfortunately it'll cost you £3.50 to download his card - but it's there I've checked ;D

Just thought I'd give you the practice, but if you really get stuck let me know

Wendi :)

Hi Wendy

Before getting your last message, I did have a go, and
yes, I have found it, worth  the £3.50, but it is a little hard to read, will have to get magnifying glass out.

I would still like to know where he is listed on the 1901 census - if at all unless he was fighting somewhere when the 1901 was taken.

Any more suggestions  :-*

Cheers

Gill

Hi Gill - WELL DONE !!!  If you'd like it decyphered try posting it and we'll try for you ( also you should be able to zoom into it on the computor.)

As I said I think he may have been fighting in the Boar War (in Africa) I know very little about what's available for the Boar War, but I know there are loads of postings relating to it................perhaps Kev, or someone else may have some advise for you.

Wendi

Ed: LOL Actually it's the BOER War - told you I didn't know alot about it !!!!
