Hi Sunflower,
Many thanks!  ;D  ;D  ;D
Those are interesting, aren't they! Husband missing in 1841, then has a 'daughter' of a different surname, in 1851!
If you do find Thomas in 1841, please let me know - I'd love to know where he'd got to!
Best regards,
Gazza

Hi Gazza,
This is now 2013 so I don’t know if you have sorted this one out by now.
This sounds like my family.
Hannah Hill was my great-grand mother. She married my ggf Joseph Knowles 8th October  1864 in Selston. They had seven children, the last being my grandfather George Barrington Knowles, my mother’s father.
Hannah was born 19th December 1838.
Birth certificate:-
Mother: Sarah formerly Moore
Father: Thomas  Hill, Collier
Place: Selston
Informant: Mother- Illiterate so marked with an “X”
She was christened on 25th February 1839. We have a copy of the baptismal certificate where the mother and father are Thomas and Sarah Hill, but here’s a bit of a mystery. The copy that we have was copied from the actual register in 1909, but the original entry in the register has an additional comment on it. In the “Child’s Christian Name” section it also says under “Hannah”, “Daughter of Smith”. This comment is not on the 1909 copy. The birth certificate is also a copy written in 1909. I am wondering if there were some problems in 1909, which, incidentally, was the year my mother was born.
In 1841 we think that Thomas Hill was in the county gaol in Nottingham described in the census as “Debter agricultural laborer”.
I assume that the daughter in 1851 (Ann Wag?) had married, had two children, and moved back home for some reason. However, the mystery that intrigues me is the “Smith” bit with Hannah, who is in my direct line of ancestors.

Regards,
Trevor

Hi Trevor

Thank you for that info - it's really interesting and yes, it does sound like we're distantly related.
I have a family tree on Genes Reunited but I can't access it today - some problem with the website I think - but when I do manage to look at it, I'll let you know if there's anything which might interest you.
Thank you for clearing up the whereabouts of Thomas in 1841 - how very sad.
I have a photograph of John Hill (brother of Hannah) - if you would like me to send it to you, please PM me your email.

Best wishes
Donna (GaznDon)

Hi Guys

If Hannah Hill was born 19 Dec 1938 and there is a note "daughter of Smith" in the original register one wonders when Thomas Hill was sent to Nottingham jail??

Valerie,

I think that you meant 1838, not 1938. Simple mistake- I do it all the time! I don't know when Thomas Hill went to gaol and when he came out (or if someone paid his debt or if it was forgiven). My only clues are the 1841 census using a process of elimination and coming up with the most likely person. Sarah Hill was living singly with the children and Thomas Hill was in gaol in Nottingham.
I have done some research on this subject at the Nottingham records office but got nowhere yet. I'll update when I find something else.
