Hatherley Hall, Cheltenham.
« on: Thursday 19 January 06 21:34 GMT (UK) »
My gt. grandfather, John Linnaeus Gould, a gardener at Hatherley Hall, Cheltenham, was accidentally drowned there in December, 1885. Can anyone tell me where this place is/was and anything about the owners during that time?

Hatherley hall, known also as hatherly manor is now a hotel.

This elegant 17th century manor house nestling in rolling green countryside is located within 37 acres of mature gardens and grounds on the edge of the Cotswold.

Hatherley Manor has recently undergone a major refurbishment, including a complete overhaul of all 52 bedrooms, the lounge, bar, restaurant and reception area, as well as two of our smaller individual meeting rooms.

The hotel now offers itself as a contemporary modern country house hotel.

I am not sure which location you mean.

There is the Hatherley Manor mentioned above,

but in the Cheltenham Gazetteer I also found reference to the Hatherley Hall in Hatherley Road , St Marks

Here it is in the 1881 census:

Henry St Clair WILKINS  Lieutenant General Royal Engineers (aged 52) Nottingham & his family & servants

Hatherley Hall, Hatherley Road, St Marks, Cheltenham

And in the Cheltenham Gazeteer:

Hatherley Court Road, off Hatherley Road. After Hatherley Court, once the residence of the Lansdown developer Pearson Thompson; auctioned 1873 after his death in Castlemaine, Australia, on 22 Nov. 1872 (Examiner). House listed 1841 Census and shown on 1964 map. Hatherley Court estate developed late 1930s by Rogers & Davies (Town Planning Committee, Mar. 1937); includes Bournside Road, 1938.

I don't know whether you have any further info that might help to distinguish one from the other?

(There is a Hatherley in Cheltenham and Down Hatherley near Gloucester, which is where the hotel is situated)

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Also found this:

Hatherley Park was opened in 1939 after nine acres of the former Hatherley Court Estate were sold to Cheltenham Borough Council and then re-laid as a park and recreation ground. The park boasts its own lake and wildlife pond, funded from a successful grant application by the Friends group. The park has a play area, popular with families and a basket ball post and junior football pitch. The original path layout with its borders of shrubs and mature trees provides an open circuit with eye catching views across the nearby hills.

This is the one in Cheltenham - it featured in the BBC situation comedy Butterflies with Wendy Craig and Geoffrey Palmer, filmed in the 1970s.

The Cheltenham building is found at www.old-maps.com (put Hatherley into the search, enlarge the map & it is at south east).  Amazingly it IS marked as Hatherley Hall!

Just looking to see what the Down Hatherley building is called on this map.

This time put Down Hatherley in the search.  The building is north west and is called Hatherley Court.  There does seem to be at least one lake nearby!

Take your pick??  :)
