Wilkins - Loose - Maidstone Area Look up Please
« on: Friday 20 January 06 09:16 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information on William Wilkins from Loose, Maidstone he was born about 1814 or 1819 and married Amanda (don't now surname) she was born about 1828 in Egerton Kent.   They had a total of about 11 children :-

Edward 1844,
Thomas 1846,
Charlie 1847,
William 1849,
Nelly 1852,
Rose 1854,
Joseph 1856,
Frank 1860,
Ivy 1860,
Louisa 1863,
Ernest 1867.

I am looking for more information on William (1814) His parents, Brothers, Sisters etc if possible.

In some records I have found William dated as 1819, but I believe that 1814 is correct, maybe you can help with this sas well.

This is the first time on this page so I hope that this is the correct way to do things.

Regards

Glen Wilkins

A copy of his marriage cert will at least give you his fathers name and occupation

The FULL BMD index is now available to search free of charge at www.ancestry.co.uk
The partial index (freebmd) can also be searched on the same website or at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

Copy certificates can be obtained online at www.gro.gov.uk

Hi Glen.
I had a look in the 1841 census but could not find William found a few Wilkins though. If any are yours I can post them for you.
If your Amanda was born 1828 that would have made her 13 in 1841 so had a look in Egerton for any amanda's.
I found only one Amanda Coppins age 10 living with her family.
I know I am clutching at straws and maybe completely wrong about this but I found a marriage in Maidstone 1846 William Wilkins and in the list was Amanda Coppins.
Now I know my brain is old but I thought maybe William got married before Amanda and had the first two children with his first wife.  She died maybe and married Amanda in 1846 where they had the rest of the kids.
Were any of these children born in Maidstone? I cannot find any births at all
If the first two children were born somewhere else I can look up 1841 census again to see if I can find William and maybe his first wife (if I am right).

If you think this makes sense I can post all the details of Amanda and the other Wilkins families.

sorry to carry on but let me know If I can help more.

Regards
Sue

Hi Sue

Thank you for doing such an extensive search for me.  I will now check through my records because you could be right in what you say about more than one wife.  I have very little information on William.   I would be grateful if you could send me what you have please.

My email address is :   email address removed by moderator - please use the secure Rootschat personal message system - thankyou
Thanks once again for your kind help.

Hi Glen,

These might be related.
HO107/459 Dist 8 Loose Hill page 5 Loose

David Wilkins 29 Bricklayer
Elizabeth do 25
Elizabeth do 19

all born this county

Loose Hill page 9 Loose

David Wilkins 53 Bricklayer
Edward do 20 Bricklayer
Samuel do 13
Eliza do 10

all born this county

I do not know where William was in 1841 and I do not have census after so checked 1881 on family search and William and Amanda are still there in Loose Road and all the sons are there in Loose Road and are Bricklayers as is William except for Edward who owns land and is a builder and Joseph is a Publican.
You can check this out it is free.

My guess is David 53 is the father but might be widowed in 1841 (it does not give that sort of detail) but please do not quote me on this I could be wrong.

1881 census does say all his children were born Loose so where was William?

Next one HO107/472/16 (cannot read name of street) page 13 Egerton.

James Coppins 45 Innkeeper
(cannot read name but female) do 50
William do 20
Charles do 14
Amanda do 10

all born this county.

the marriage I found was on Free BMD William Wilkins sep 1846 Maidstone V5 P356 (There is a list and Amanda is in there).

Sorry I cannot help any more but if you think of something please let me know.

Regard
Sue :)

Hi Glen

Do you have the census data? because 1851 seems to confirm Amanda Coppins as the wife - and interestingly, there is no sign of Edward and Thomas living with them. Also Amanda is 13 years younger than her husband

William Wilkins 35 Loose, Kent Head  Brick layer
Amanda Wilkins 22 Egerton, Kent Wife
Charles Wilkins 4 Loose, Kent Son
William Wilkins 2 Loose, Kent  Son
Mary Coppin 9 Egerton, Kent Niece  scholar
Loose Village Loose  Kent HO107/1616  452/4

In 1861, I have found Edward living with his Uncle Edward Wilkins (I was hoping to find him with perhaps his mother's family). Cannot yet find him in 1851.

In 1851 there is a Thomas, born Marden, living with Uncle George Wilkins in Loose

Just found Edward as well (written as Ed) with Uncle Edward.

So it does seem likely that they may have belonged to a previous wife

If you would like any of the census details, let me know

Hi Trish,
Just out of curiosity where does it say Edward was born in 1851 census.
I had a look through Marden hoping William was there even though Thomas was born after but could not find him there either.
Did not find George Wilkins in 1841 loose either so they are a mystery.

Hi Sue/Glen

I probably should have given all the details (tis a lazy Sunday here  :) :) )
so here they are now - it may help you find the all Wilkins in 1841  as there seem to be 2 uncles involved. I think I may have found the birth of Thomas - Dec Qtr 1845 - listed as "Male". I thought this may be if his mother died giving birth - they didn't name the babe for awhile - but I can't find the death of a female Wilkins in Maidstone for that or the next quarter  ???

1851
Edward Wilkins 33 Loose  Kent Head Bricklayer
Elizabeth Wilkins 30 Et Farleigh  Kent, England Wife
Richd Obey 68 Et Malling  Kent Lodger Ag lab
Ed Wilkins 7 Loose  Kent Nephew
Loose Hill  Loose  Kent  HO107/1616 455/10

1861
Edward Wilkins 42 Loose  Kent Head Inn keeper
Elizabeth Wilkins 40 East Farleigh  Kent, England Wife
Richd Obey 77 East Malling  Kent Father in Law  Ag lab (77  :'( )
Ed Wilkins 17 Loose  Kent Nephew  bricklayer
Loose Rd Paper Making (Arm)? Loose  Kent  RG9/499 62/5
That address could be the name of the Inn? paper Maker Arms ?

1851
George Wilkins 42 Loose, Kent Head  Brick layer
Mary Wilkins 36 Loose, Kent Wife  Dress Maker
Thomas Wilkins 5 Marden, Kent Nephew
Mill (or Nill) St  Loose  Kent  HO107/1616  472/14

Can't see Thomas in 1861 - he is not with George and Mary - Mary says she is born Marsden in 1861, so I guess it is near Loose. George 51, Mary 46 - living Loose Hill.

Trish
