Where is Hitchen?
« on: Friday 20 January 06 22:36 GMT (UK) »
I have spent hours trawling through Ancestry's BMD images trying to find a certain birth.  I found only one possibility - a birth registered in Hitchen.  Where is Hitchen?  I can't find it in the Gazeteer of British Place Names.
Wiltshire:  Banks, Taylor
Somerset:  Duddridge, Richards, Barnard, Pillinger
Gloucestershire:  Barnard, Marsh, Crossman
Bristol:  Banks, Duddridge, Barnard
Down:  Ennis, McGee
Wicklow:  Chapman, Pepper
Wigtownshire:  Logan, Conning
Wisconsin:  Ennis, Chapman, Logan, Ware
Maine:  Ware, Mitchell, Tarr, Davis

Thanks for the map.  I had already located this town (Hitchin) but the birth record I am referring to clearly said Hitchen (with an e").  Maybe it was misspelled in the register.

That has to be it. I don't know any other Hitchin or Hitchen! (and certainly not one which was used as a registration district)!

Cheers Veron

I think you will find as Veron says that they are both the same place -
IGI usually spells it with an "e" - PRO and later maps with the "i"

Cheers
