Illenden Bashford Kent
« on: Tuesday 24 January 06 01:10 GMT (UK) »
In researching my mother's ancestry I found a site (now deleted) with a little info. which I would like verified/extended if possible, please.
Summary of current info:
Ann (Maria) Bashford b Dover about 1800
- mother of Lucy Maria Illenden Bashford  b 1837 c Folkestone, Kent in Aug 1837 (and two other children)
Assumed that Frederick Illenden was Lucy's father - Ann was not married.  Frederick was either a blacksmith or seafarer, probably died 1837.
Once Lucy reached Australia the name Illenden was used (not Bashford).
Lucy was Mum's grandmother.
It is very difficult to find info on Illendens, and to check if related!
Thanks for any help at all!!

Hi JenJ - welcome to Rootschat!

Well, I have found Lucy's christening record and that of her brother.  They're both on the International Genealogical Index (IGI) at www.familysearch.org.  You can see them there yourself...

Lucy Maria Illenden Bashford c. 20 Aug 1837 in Folkestone, Kent.
Fred Jn Benthan Bashford also c. 20 Aug 1837 Folkestone.
Fred's record also indicates that he was born 01 Jun 1829.
In both cases the mother is given as An Bashford (yes, with only 1 n - probably transcription error), no father given.  I don't know what the Jn in Fred's is for  (Jonathan?).

I tried looking for Illendens in Folkestone, but there don't seem to be many.  All I could find was a William married in 1731, another William married in 1744 and an Edward married in 1731.  Also an Eliz christened in 1664.  All of these are listed as "Ellenden".

I couldn't find Ann's christening in Dover -  I don't know how familiar you are with the IGI, but it's not complete.  It has entries from A LOT of parish records, but there are many gaps in years and some parishes aren't represented at all.

I'm afraid that's all I can come up with right now...  I hope that helps!

Hi Jen

The Illenden (or Ellenden) name is not uncommon in Dover.

The IGI entries for Dover St Mary the Virgin were taken from a set of transcriptions, copies of which are now held in Dover library.  Many Kent parishes have not be added to the IGI because of the resistance of the incumbents to having their parishoners re-baptised (albeit posthumously) into the Mormon faith.  ;)

The transcripts only cover baptisms up to about 1812, so any after that would be unlikely to appear on the IGI.  However, we do have the more recent registers on microfiche (courtesy of the Kent Family History Society) so I can have a look for you when I'm next in the library.

What evidence do you have that Frederick was Lucy's father?

Regards, Bill

Thanks for the responses.
MJP - I hadn't realised there was more than census info. on the IGI.  Thank you for making me aware of the extra information available.
Bill749 - The only evidence I have that Frederick was Lucy's father was obtained from the (now unavailable; so glad I printed it at the time) family history research of another descendant of Lucy's.  It stated that Frederick is listed as the father of Lucy's brother, Frederick John Bushford (Bentham) Illenden on the wedding certificate of Frederick junior.  Also, 'his occupation is listed as a blacksmith on the death certificate of Ann Illenden when she died in Tasmania in 1877'.  It is strange that Ann's death certificate says she was a blacksmith's wife if she is also reported as not having been married to Frederick.
More confusion.  Still, I'll keep trying.  Thanks for your help - hope this info is useful.
