Any Advice On Where To Find My Great Uncle? Thanks.
« on: Wednesday 25 January 06 07:03 GMT (UK) »
I had 2 great uncles who were killed in the 1st world war. The English one is mentioned on all the usual sites, but I havnt been able to locate the scottish one. I am not sure if I am looking in the right place. His name was I believe Victor Burns and he was from the Dingwall, Muir of Ord area and was the son of John Burns of the Fairburn estate in Muir of Ord.
My aunt has given me his first name so I hope it wasnt just the name he was known by in the family. Any clues on where to look would be gratefully received.
                    Many thanks.
Reynolds, Woodham, Payne, Wilmott, Hart, Richardson, Packwood, Tandy, Dexter - Bedfordshire.
Chamberlain and Wagstaff- Hunts.
Freeman, Cheney, Cox- Northants.
Burns, Muter, Cobban, Hossack, Strachan, Moonlight.
Lanarkshire, Ross and Cromarty and Kincardineshire.
Garvey- Ireland.

Hi Linmey
He should still be on the CWGC site, it covers all the UK and Commonwealth countries.

Have you managed to find him and his family on the 1901 census? It's available through Scotlandspeople website. Might be worth a look.

Maybe Victor was his second name.
regards Sylvia

Officers and Soldiers pre 1921
Because of bombing in 1940 only about 25% to 30% of soldiers' records from the period 1914-1920 have survived. The remainder can be found at The National Archives:
The National Archives,
Ruskin Avenue,
Kew,
Richmond,
Surrey TW9 4DU.

i've checked 'Soldier died in the Great War' with no success

no Victor Burns (in fact no V's in Burns section)
no Burns coming up as resided, born or enlisted in Dingwall

Thank you everyone for your replies. I looked on the CWGC and like you sylvia, didnt find a mention of a burns beginning with a V. I have to say L23 that the Seaforth Highlanders rings a bell. I think thats what my grandfather was in so perhaos his brother was in the same.
Thanks for the tip mack and I need to do some checking on the 1901.
         Best wishes  Linda.

I have now found Victor on the 1901 census and he was then 3 years old. So Victor was his real name by the looks of it. At least I know for sure and I can search further.
         Many thanks.
