DANIEL AUSTEN of Salehurst, Sussex
« on: Wednesday 25 January 06 12:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

Can anyone help me find birth details of a Daniel Austen b abt 1819 in Salehurst, Sussex.  He married Agnes Dunk in 1840 in St Marylebone, Middx, but the family returned to Etchingham after this. I have found the family in 1851 and 1861 census returns .

Daniel's father is William Austen, a farmer (taken from marriage cert).  I have no information on his mother.

Many thanks

Hi

Looking at the 1841 census for your Austin/ Austen ancestors.

In Salehurst we have in Fair Lane, Salehurst

William Austen, 70, Ag Lab and Ann Austin, 63

Although there are 3 Austin entries and 2 Austen entries for Salehurst and surrounding district - the above is the only William.

In Wadhurst there is a Thomas Austen & Family - Farmer.

Chris,

Thanks for the info.  No that Daniel is a different person.  I thought it was my Daniel originally, but after doing some research, I found out that it was a different family.  I have a feeling they might be related, but haven't worked out the connection yet (William Austen and Daniel Austin might have been brothers?)

Daniel and Agnes moved back to a place called Swiftsden and are recorded there in the 1851 and 1861 census.  I'm puzzled why they went to St Marylebone to get married as Agnes was also from Etchingham.

Chris,

It is all starting to make sense now.  Two more children that I didn't know about.  The son would have been born out of wedlock so that is probably why they moved out of the area for a while and came back married!  It was also interesting to see another Dunk in the household.  I knew Agnes had a twin sister called Louisa and a brother called John, but I never knew about another brother called James!

Thank you ever so much for your help.

Chris,

Would you be able to provide the details of Thomas Austen and his family? I believe him to be Daniel's uncle.

Many thanks

Hi again

Think this one may also be related, as he is not born in Sussex

HO07/ 1116/ 9 - Durgates, Wadhurst

AUSTEN, Henry, 45, Farmer - not born in Sussex
............  John, 20
............  Sarah, 15
............  Henry, 15
............  Catherine, 15
............  Elizabeth, 13
............  Mary, 11
............  William, 8
............  Thomas, 6
............  Jefferey, 80, Ind. - Not born in Sussex
plus 1 female servant

Looks as though Jefferey could be the father of said smiths
