Murder at Caer Bragdy
« on: Wednesday 25 January 06 18:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

In March 1931 my paternal grandfather, WILLIAM JOHN CORBETT had a sort of breakdown and murdered my grandmother ETHEL LOUISA (nee JONES) by cutting her throat with a razor.  He then went into the MARDY WOODS(?) and attempted to commit suicide before being found by the local constable, WILLIAM BOWEN. He went to the gallows for the crime in August of that year.  The address where the tragedy took place was:

48 CAER BRAGDY (off LAWRENCE STREET), Glamorgan.  I'm very curious to know if the house still stands.

Also, my grandmother is apparantly buried at PENYRHEOL CEMETERY.   Although it's the opposite end of the world for me, my hope is that one day I'll be able to take my father's ashes (he died December 2004) and scatter them near where his mother was laid to rest.

I've written further details of the events on the Wales - General board and would love to know if I have any living relatives.
Especially looking for CORBETT / JONES connections.  Would love to find living relatives on my father's side.  Mother's side: HOLDING, GILBY, EVANS, WILDING etc. Have tree on Genes Reunited.

hi there,
i checked out caerphilly street maps and i found caerbragdy. If you look  for houses for sale in that area then caerbragdy shows up as one word but with properties for sale there so it must still stand. I am not too familiar with Caerphilly as i have only worked in the town but maybe an estate agent online would show a photo of the house.

Hello Ange,

I'm sure that this incident would have been reported in the local press of the time, - have you checked that out?

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Don't know if you solved this but Caerbragdy is here. The houses are too new and I don't know what was there before.

Never heard of Mardy Woods but there are lots of streets in Caerphilly starting with Corbetts  :)

hi i have recently started my family tree on ancesetry .com and i am looking for any info on marjorie alexia corbett. she would be your auntie ? she was born in 1926 to william john corbett and ethel louisa corbett (nee jones) i have only recently dicovered the tragic surcomstances of ethels death. I   am not a blood relation, but am close to somone who is.  it is very complicated ....I read that you would like to bring your dads ashes back home to wales,? if possible i would love to know were ethel is laid to rest so as i could pay my respects. i relise that i read this in an old post. my mother is 88 and she knew marjorie when marjorie was 18 and she would love to know that marjorie went on to have a good life. i would appreciate any information you could offer. many thanks julie lang
