Anyone know where I can find out about a birth in 1923 in Scotland without having to buy the actual birth certificate??

Youneed to find a searcher who will transcribe it for you in New Register House. This is usually cheaper than sending for an official copy. There are links to lists of searchers on the Scotland's People and GROS web sites.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
