How very interesting!! I bet his second wife was the one who wanted the registry office! Them Browns seem to be a godless lot!!

However, Tom L Brown, son of Burdett Lambton Brown, the theological student appears to be a chaplain at a boys' home in the 1901 census. As a mature student who graduated with a degree in Theology just 2 years ago, this is most heartening news!!

Oodles of thanks, you've all been stars! Your help is most appreciated

I'm trying to find out about Thomas Farquharson (b. 1856) in Seaham Harbour, Ann Farquharson (b. 1832) in South Shields, she was widowed before the 1881 census, I believe she may have been married to either Henry or John (who died around 1858.)  I would love to find out more about Thomas's father and mother.  Can you help, please?
