hint for searching online 1841 Channel Islands census

The Jerseymaid site has already been posted here:

http://members.shaw.ca/Jerseymaid/

The database isn't searchable other than by going to each page at the site and doing a "find" for a name.

Here's a quick way to search it:

Put the following in Google's search box:

 site:members.shaw.ca jerseymaid

and after "jerseymaid", put the surname you are looking for, e.g.:

 site:members.shaw.ca jerseymaid hill

Now if you're looking for a common surname/word, this won't be hugely helpful.  For instance, a surname I'm interested in is Hill, so of course that search comes up with 48 results that include people who live on Hill Street, etc.  (And just because Google shows a synopsis of a page with someone on Hill Street, that doesn't mean that there aren't also people named Hill on the page.)  But it's still easier than combing through, page by page.

Hope this makes life easier for someone!

I think Jerseymaid deserves some fan mail. ;)

We assume that everything online will be online forever!

I know that I have recently discovered that some things I expected to be there when I wanted them, aren't, and I hadn't copied off what I needed. Let that be a lesson to us. ;)

I think the first post in this thread was referring to census transcriptions. In 2006, sites like Ancestry hadn't yet transcribed a lot of the available UK censuses. If that's what you're looking for, try one of the commercial sites, is your best bet now.

There's other info here, too:
