Houghton le Spring workhouse - Emmerson
« on: Friday 27 January 06 22:09 GMT (UK) »
John Emmerson was born around 1911 in Hetton le Hole. In 1919 his mother died and he and his sister Jane went straight into the workhouse, in Houghton le Spring. I believe that he came out of the workhouse in approx. 1936 and went into the army. Does anyone have access to the workhouse records? I am trying to find the names of his parents and any additional information relevant to family history that the records may contain. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Frances

Thank you very much for the link. I have looked on the website and it gives very useful information about workhouse conditions etc. (We certainly have a lot to be thankful for these days!)  Houghton le Spring workhouse is mentioned and the records appear to be housed at Durham County Record Office. Apparently few records survive. I live in Essex and a trip to Durham at the moment is out of the question.
Thank you for your help
Hazel

Hi Hazel,

I moved from Essex last summer, I was born there and lived in our last house for thirty years! Things change and we moved to be nearer our sons.

You could always write, telephone or email the Durham Record Office. I am trying to get records also (not from Durham), not had a reply yet but they may be very busy with the number of requests they are receiving.

Kind Regards,

Frances :)

Frances

Thank you, I will  do that. I have revisited the website that you suggested and it is really comprehensive. I have learned a lot. If I am lucky, and the records I need survive, they should provide me with some useful information.
Thank you very much for your interest
Regards
Hazel

John Emmerson was born 18 March 1911 in Hetton le Hole to George William and Francis (Nee Hunter) Emmerson. Yes his mother died in 1919 and he and his sister Jane were placed in the workhouse in Houghton le Spring in 1919, his elder brother George I have been told was taken in by his grandmother and was working in the coalmines. He left the workhouse on his 18th birthday and joined the army the day after enlisting at Catterick army camp. He spent approimately 26 years in the army, retiring in 1955.
I hope this assists you in your search if anymore information required please get in touch
Regards
Derek

Hi Derek

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

According to her profile, Hazel posted 3 times and hasn't been back to Rootschat since 2006.

As long as her email address hasn't changed, she should receive notifications that we have posted and hopefully comer back soon.

Fingers crossed.
