The address for St Albans Register Office is;

The Gatehouse, 1 Victoria Square, Victoria Street, St Albans, AL1 3TF.
Tel: 01727 774030. Fax: 01727 774032

St Albans library holds parish films for the St Albans area including directories, files of newspapers, census records, the IGI, and many reference guides. They also have a lot of unique material, and in addition, hold the Lewis Evans Collection of Hertfordshire local history.

St Albans Central Library
The Maltings
St Albans
Herts

Tel: 01438 737333

All Herts records are held at HALS in Hertford.  See my HALS post.

I visit St Albans library fairly regularly and I'm quite willing to look things up.  Let me know what you are looking for and I'll see if I can help.

That would be wonderful, although its very complicated, and im not really sure what information you can get from the library and what it contains.
I have the marriage certificate of William Samuel Dimmock from St Albans and Martha Warren (my ggrandparents) who married in 1898 in bucks.  It states that William S was 26 making his birth year 1872... It also says that his father was also William Dimmock and was an Ostler (horsekeeper i believe)

I have managed to find  a family which kind of fits apart from the William Samuel was born 1869.  the only William Dimmock i can find between 1871-1873 was born oct/nov/dec 1872 in Hitchin (see attached) and i need to find out who his parents were ie was his father William.

Im not sure if this possible to find but ill look forward to hearing from you,

Thanks,
Sarah

Sarah

Sadly, it is not possible to find out the parentage without buying a certificate.  As you know William's father's name however, you could specify that the certificate should not be issued unless this William DIMMOCK's father is William.  You will not then be charged the full price of the certificate, and will be issued with a credit.

All BMD certificates can be ordered online at the General Record Office.

Herts certificates can also be ordered online from Hertford.

I note that the birth you mention from the GRO indexes occurred at Hitchin RD, which doesn't cover St Albans.

Hi Sarah

As Rick mentioned there will not be any details of Hitchin in St Albans library  :-\

I would be surprised if the one in the index is your William as there is no middle name or initial (although obviously not totally impossible!) I would think that it's more likely that his age is incorrect on his marriage cert.

Do you have him on any census?  It might be worthwhile seeing if anyone can find any likely suspects in 1891 in St Albans.  The library does have the census but it is not indexed so I would need a reference or address.  Does it have his address on the marriage certificate or does it just say St Albans?

There are also a number of historical directories for St Albans in the library which may have him, but it would be difficult to be sure it's him without an address.  I can certainly have a look though.  If we do find a likely suspect who has been born in St Albans, I would be able to check the christening records which would name his parents - although obviously it would depend on him being christened!

Sorry I can't be more help yet.

Julie
