1851 Census Lookup Request STEVENSON, E. Hanney, (Wantage Dist)
« on: Tuesday 21 September 04 20:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am new to RootsChat and I wonder if some kind soul could help me find a most elusive gt.grandmother. Her name was Belinda STEVENSON and she would have been about 8 in 1851(I am guessing her age). Since
Belinda was an unusual name at that time, I don't suppose there was more than one in East Hanney. I have no information about her family and I am hoping find names of her parents and siblings. She died young
after giving birth to her only child, my grandmother. After her death, her husband's family took charge and made sure that my grandmother never met her Stevenson grandparents or learned anything about them. I could not find her birth record in FreeBMD. It was not too long after civil registration started, so perhaps she was not registered. PRs for West Hanney(closest church) do not seem to be available anywhere
for events after 1812.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Carmela

I got a bit carried away down at the Library, but never mind. I only found one Belinda Stevenson in all of 1841,51,61 East Hannay. She was 25 in 1861. which makes her a little old for yours, but ages are a bit random in some of these.

Anyway, here are all the Stevensons I could find in those Census's in East Hannay:

EmPers,
Thank you, thank you. I am almost certain that the Belinda in the 1861 Cen. is the right one. I could have been wrong in my guess of her age(based on family info., not written records).
I noticed that there is a similar family in the 1841, John and Martha with daughter Martha. Ages same as 1861, but no Belinda. Curious. They are not there in 1851, then re-appear in 1861. Also the first John is a baker and the second, a grocer. Could well be the same family. Perhaps Belinda was away from home in 1841  or the enumerator got her age wrong and she had not yet been born.
Oh, well,I am sure it will all make sense, one day,if I can get a look at the West Hanney PRs.
I am simply delighted  to have found that my deductions from very flimsy evidence have proved to be true.(I think)
The extra Stevenson families may turn out to be useful
at some time. In such a small village, there is a good chance that they may be related, somehow. Thanks for including them.
Thanks again,
Carmela

Yes, I wondered about that too. It seemed like a very strange way to spell Lydia. Also thought that perhaps
Belinda was a middle name and when the census enumerator came, they decided to give her real first name. I have come across that in census records before.
All I know for certain is that there was a sister who died when Belinda was 9 years old. I have a sampler
sewn by Belinda on which there is a little poem about
the death of her sister. Unfortunately, the sister is not named and there is no date, but it is "signed",
 "Belinda Stevenson, age nine".
