What first name is Tno. an abbreviation of?
« on: Monday 30 January 06 01:46 GMT (UK) »
When researching the Guy's Postal Directory 1914 for Meelin I have found reference to "Kepple Tno of Tooreennagunpoge"

I would welcome hearing what Tno is an abbreviation for.  I have had no luck with Google or Yahoo searches.

Many thanks in anticipation, from a very warm summer afternoon in New Zealand.  Kiskeam

Kiskeam,

I wonder whether it could possibly be a typo/misprint for either Jno (John) or Tho (Thomas)?

A look at the Griffiths Valuations (admittedly half a century or more earlier) for KEPPLE at:
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php
finds the following KEPPLEs in the townland of Tooreennaguppoge (the usual spelling) in the parish of Clonfert - two with forename John, a Michael, a Cornelius, a Daniel, and an Edmond.

I'm not sure where you found the reference but, after writing the above, I Googled for the spelling 'Torreennagunpoge' and got just the one hit - the following in what is obviously a directory (the URL wouldn't open so this is from a cached Google version from 2004):
Kepple Ptk,Tooreennagunpoge
Kepple Tno, Tooreennaguppoge

As you can see, the townland is spelled differently in each entry which suggests that it is a transcription, and that Tno might also be an error.  Though it does seem that, in the list, John is usually spelled out in full and Thomas abbreviated as Thos.

Hi JAP

Many thanks for your prompt response to my query.

The site I found the listing on was http://www.failteromhat.com/guy/meelin.htm

Yes I readily identify with your suggestion that the Tno maybe a transcription error.

I thought it was worthwhile pitching this query up on what I consider to be the most active of webpages for Irish queries.

Hi Kiskeam,

It's the same page but it came up on Google as:
204.60.95.138/hayes1966/guy/meelin.htm
which wasn't successful - so I looked at the cached version.

John Hayes's Failte Romhat site certainly contains a wealth of information.

I'm still a bit worried (like you no doubt) that there's not a Jno or a Tho elsewhere on the page.  Perhaps it might be worth emailing the owner of the site in case he holds the original directory and could check it out for you?

Hi JAP

I took up your sound suggestion and made contact with John Hayes.

John confirmed the Tno should read Jno.

Hi,

A general information for all irish searchers:

John Hayes had many pages at
204.60.95.138/hayes1966/... or members.cox.net/hayes1966/...

He then transferred them all to a new web-site: http://www.failteromhat.com/

so, apart from any ammendations and additions, you are seeing basically the same pages.

As a general rule, If you see any other "old" hayes1966-links, which don't work then try the new new site; you should find them there.
