How do you find a soldier

I am looking for a James Rudd b 1837. On his marriage certificate it said his profession was a soldier. He came to Australia in 1857 from England, married in 1858. I am not sure whether he became a soldier in Australia or he was already a soldier when he was in England. Is there a way to find out if he was a soldier in England? Do they have an index where you can look up a list of names? I don't have any information on what regiment, etc.

Did you find the answer to this one Lisa? He was born in Hadleigh, Suffolk and served with 40th Foot, number 3683.

Wow, I posted this over 14 years ago. And I never did find out. Thank you for this info. This is the correct one as I know he was born in Hadleigh. Can I ask where you found this out as I would be interested if any more info about his service.

You can find his army file on both FindMyPast and Fold 3.

  seems he served over 6yrs, 5yrs of which where in Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania.

I have not to a subscription FindMyPast at the moment. I usually wait until I have a few things to look up then subscribe for a month as I already have a subscription to Ancestry.
