Hi sarah
On the 1881 and 1891 the only William Dimmocks in St Albans are a William snr with a son William, but the son is born 1869 and the father is a Carman on the 1881 and a General Labourer on the 1891. Could this be them?

Well this is what ive been wondering, since they are the ONLY ones i can find.  I have a copy of William Samuels marriage certificate to Martha Warren which clearly states he was 26 when he married in 1898 which makes him born 1872/71/73.  I have seen the 1901 census record of him with Martha and my great grandfather William Albert.  which again puts his birth year to 1872. and his birth place as St Albans.
However the only other William Dimmock i can find before this was in 1891, a Cellerman in St Albans born 1871.  But as he isnt with his family i cant find out more, and i'm very stuck as there just isnt any definate record i can pinpoint and if it is that family above then there is nothing i can definatly match to confirm it!!

Help!!

hello, do you think its possible that it could be spelt Dymock though, cos were Dimmock now!!
the only family i can find at the moment are William Dimmock - bn 1869 whose father and mother were William and Emma.  Also the 1901 census and the marriage certificate ive got make his birth yr 1872 (he was 26 when he married in 1898) :S im very confused - Dymock, and the 1869 dont make sense but its William Samuel :S

I don't whether this is the right person but I see he's William Samuel (and his father is a William), which is already looking good. Also bear in mind that most people couldn't read or write, therefore names were often spelled just as the person who wrote them down thought they should be.

Also, re his age, many of us have come across ancestors who obviously weren't very concerned about their exact age throughout the census returns, marriage certs etc.

However, I see 1891 has 2 different William Dimmocks (one of which I can't trace either forwards or backwards) so I suggest you check the complete BMD indexes for a possible 2nd William Samuel Dimmock or (variants). www.ancestry.co.uk is offering free access to the complete indexes at the moment  so why not take advantage of this?

I saw that you have his marriage cert. Any chance there's an interesting clue on it? Does his address match with William sr's by any chance? Are there Dimmock witnesses? What's everybody's occupation?
