Stoker on Submarine

Would there be such a thing as a stoker on a submarine 
Someone I know has been told that their father was a stoker on a submarine.
Which sank of New Foundland in Canada.

Volunteers to the Royal Canadian Navy had their wages determined partly by any previous Merchany Navy service.  A stoker carried a 20c per day supplement.  His actual pay depended on rank but would be around $1 60 per day.

Thus while there wouldn't be any stoking to do on a submarine it was a skill which carried a premium.

He was a Scottish man, who's sub went down in 1942, in New Foundland, Canada.
