Name-based searches in Scotland.
« on: Friday 03 February 06 07:54 GMT (UK) »
I'm searching for a particular person, with an unusual surname, who was born in England but might have moved to Scotland at some stage.  I've looked for Scottish records but it appears you have to pay - which I don't mind if there is useful information available - but the only dates I can see available on the relevant website end at 1955 - it's highly likely that she died after this date (I know she had a child in 1944).  Judging by the other helpful posts on this topic, am I right in thinkinh there is no easy way of searching other than going there yourself?  I don't have enough info to pay the Scottish GRO to do a search as I don't have a clue what year she died.
thanks
Lisa

Hi there,

You are indeed correct that scotlandspeople only have death certificates online until 1955.  As such, to find the death certificate you will either have to go to Edinburgh yourself (or employ someone else to go) or apply to the GROS.

However, it may be possible to narrow things down to help a little in your search.  Knowing what this site is like, if you post a little bit of info about your 'missing person', lots of people will be willing to help track them down :)

Cheers,

If you give me the information, I will do a look up for you at New Register House next week.

Thank you very much, I'm really grateful.  The person I'm looking for is Alexia Patricia Jennie (or Jeannie) Nellie Rakestrow, nee Band.  She was born on 27 October 1905 in Plymouth and married Henry Claude Rakestrow in 1944.  If she was living in Scotland it's probably likely that she would have been in the Edinburgh area, but I can't be sure of this.  Any information would be useful; she might have been divorced/widowed and remarried, for example.
thanks again
Lisa

Bit of an update - I've found her husband Henry C Rakestrow who died in 1951 in the Plymouth area - but definitely no sign of Alexia in any English or Welsh death records.
thanks
