Stephens birth cert
« on: Saturday 04 February 06 13:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

on the 1881 census it has my great grandmother down as born in 'Leamington, Hereford'. I am assuming this is a mistake and that it should be Leominster.

Her three siblings were all born in Worcester to a Worcester-born mum, and I am trying to track down the father of the four illigitimate children. I have found the siblings' birth certs but not my g grandmother's, and none f them mention a father. I think I know why this is but I would still like to get a copy of her birth cert.

I have taken several gambles from freebmd but there is nothing that matches so far. can anybody help?

Mary Stephens, b1878/9, mother = Caroline Stephens of Worcester, probably would have no father listed either.

Thanks for any help/ideas... :)

Hi Elsiegee,

I've looked through the birth index 1878/79, there's nothing that fits with Mary Stephens.

Wondering if she was registered under another surname (father's perhaps  ;) )

See what you turn up from your visit to Worcester family history centre.

You may find a baptism  ::)

...........

My grandmother' birth was registered under her mother's common law husband's name, this caused no end of problems in finding her birth, because later she reverted to her mother's "maiden" name  ::) and this later name was what we were originally looking for  ???

What did she put down on the 1891 and 1901 census?

In 1891 she was Mary Stevens, with a V, and 1901 she had a PH again.  By 1891 her mother had married William Pulling, (Mary is listed with then on both censuses) but I'm sure he's not the father as he lists her and the other previous children as 'steps'.

In both 1891 and 1901 its down as Worcester, but in 1881 it says 'Leamington, hereford'.
