Brynmawr - where to look?
« on: Saturday 04 February 06 19:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm searching for someone whose residence is Brynmawr ca1899 - could someone tell me where to look ie which county or which area that Brynmawr will come under on a census for example.
Your help is much appreciated.
Helen

Hi Cardiff,
Thanks for your help, the map indicating Brynmawr illustrates my point exactly, even if I didn't express
it well in my first message, sorry.

I know that Brynmawr is right on the border between Breconshire and Monmouthshire, so that I don't really
know in which county to look on the census forms for my ancestor, Sarah Williams born
ca 1878.

In 1901 she is in Abertillery, Monmouthshire, after her marriage in 1899
that took place in LLanelly in Breconshire, where at the time she
was resident in Brynmawr.

I'm assuming therefore that she might also have been resident there in
1891's census, but does Brynmawr then come under Monmouthshire/Bedwelty
on the census? ???

Hi

I know that for much of the 20th century Brynmawr was in Breconshire.  I blieve it finally came into Gwent with the reorganisation in the early 70's.  So if it was me I would start with Llanelly!  ;D  I really don't think Brynmawr was under Bedwelty at that time!

Good luck

Julie  :)
Stiff - Monmouthshire & Glos, Parry - Monmouthshire
Stafford - Glos, Liles - Glos, Bright- Glos, Webb - Monmouthshire & Glos, Smart - Glos, Smith - Glos
Sullivan - Ireland, Jones (oh dear! Almost as bad as Smith), Walker - Somerset, Llewellyn
And, no don't laugh...Crump...I think it's great!

And of course, if I ever do manage to do a successful look up it is crown copyright and all that legal stuff!

In the 1960's I used to work Bryn Mawr market, saturday mornings, so I know where it is (how to get there) but I don't know which county.

GENUKI says this about Brynmawr in Monmouthshire:

Quote
Abergavenny
Created 1st July 1837. Mainly in Monmouthshire, but included part of Herefordshire.
Sub-districts : Abergavenny; Aberystruth; Blaenavon; Llanarth; Llanvihangel; Rock Bedwelty; Tredegar.
GRO volumes : XXVI (1837-51); 11a (1852-1930).

Abergavenny, Aberystruth (1837-61), Aberystruth Brynmawr (1837-61), Bedwelty (1837-61), Bettwsnewydd, Bryngwyn, Clytha, Cwmyou, Fwthog (from 1891), Llanarth, Llanellen, Llanfoist, Llangattock-Llingoed, Llangattock-nigh-Usk, Llansaintfraed, Llanthewy-Rhythweich, Llanthewy-Skirrid, Llantilio Pertholey, Llanvairkilgidin, Llanvapley, Llanvetherine, Llanvihangel Crucorney, Llanvihangel-nigh-Usk, Llanwenarth Citra, Llanwenarth Ultra, Lower Llanover, Oldcastle, Rock Bedwelty (1837-61), Tredegar (1837-61), Upper Llanover.
at: http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/mon.htm

and this for Breconshire:
Quote
Crickhowell
Created 1st July 1837.
Sub-districts : Crickhowell; Cwmdu; Llanelly; Llangattock; Llangunider.
GRO volumes : XXVI (1837-51); 11b (1852-1930).

Aberystruth (from 1900), Brynmawr (from 1900), Crickhowell, Grwynefawr, Grwynefechan, Llanbedr, Llanelly, Llanfihangel, Llangattock, Llangenny, Llangunider, Partrishow.
at: http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/bre.htm

So where was it from 1861 to 1900 ??

At the top of the Monmouthshire page it also says:
Quote
The list below shows the composition of the civil registration districts in Monmouthshire between 1st July 1837 and 31st March 1930. The same districts were used to compile the censuses returns for the years 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901.

but then again, at the top of the Brecon page ist says:
Quote
The list below shows the composition of the civil registration districts in Breconshire (Brecknock) between 1st July 1837 and 31st March 1930. The same districts were used to compile the censuses returns for the years 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901.

Personally, I think it's in, what was then, Monmouth

Hope this helps,
Bob

Many thanks to you all for the great responses - it's given me plenty of ideas!
After a bit of a scout around, I've found Brynmawr, for 1891 census at least, it's under Breconshire/Llanelly!
I'm not much closer to finding Sarah Williams but at least I'm looking in the right place now!
By the way, I know Brynmawr a bit, used to go there as a teenager to the cinema, after the one in Tredegar closed down!!! Never thought I'd be wondering which county it came under in 1891!! :D

Cheers everyone
