Where is Puttoxhill? and other questions
« on: Sunday 05 February 06 09:07 GMT (UK) »
Good morning all,

Trying to take my Cains back from Hertfordshire into Bedfordshire has brought to my attention in the 1851 census at Flitwick, Bedfordshire
William Cain Senior M 70 Blacksmith Beds Puttoxhill
Mary Cain Wife M 68 " Clifton
HO107/1754 Ampthill Sh1tlington Folio 379 Page 6

I see on the IGI two possible marriages for William Cain and Mary, the one which seems more likely took place on 11th March, 1803 to Mary Stevens in Henlow Bedfordshire, but that is only because there is another to a Mary Allen on 6th November 1830 in Luton.

Can anybody give me some adviced please as to where Puttoxhill is and also whether these two with birthplaces there and Clifton, may have married in Henlow?

Thought I'd ask geography questions first before I go chasing my tail after totally the wrong people  ;D
Thanks all
Mary

Hi Mary

Its Pulloxhill - just south of Ampthill & to east of Flitwick
The other village mentioned is Shillington

Both places are to south west of Clifton / Henlow

That seems to fit very well, thanks for your help John.  Glad you clarified the "Shillington"  ;)

The village was actually Shitlington in the 19th century, so it wasn't an enumeration/transcription error in the 1851 census!

Clifton and Henlow are adjacent parishes only a mile apart. The 1803 marriage in Henlow shows both William and Mary as of this parish.

Thanks David, I knew the Bedfordshire lads would come through with the information for me and just look how quickly you have.

I wasn't even too sure that Rootschat would let me type Shitlington  ;D ;D

I have some work to do before I can claim these Cains, it's a new generation I'm trying to get used to being in Bedfordshire and still feeling my way around with them, so appreciate all your help.

Best wishes
Mary
